Nominal dimensions from drawing
(Yoke + stock coil pack) 74" deep (along particle axis) 92" wide 148" tall
Nominal dimensions from Whit's measuring tape
(Yoke only) 48" deep (along particle axis) 110" wide 147" tall Yoke Weight: 74.6 tons
Aperture in yoke
48" tall 48" 'deep' (along particle axis) 18.5" wide (pole gap) NOTE: 12.5" wide gap if BNL 3" shims are installed
Field
2.0 T.m (max 1.69T; at 2kA, power 440kW) -- 'standard' NOTE: 2.5 T.m *can* be reached by shimming the coils (safest, easiest?) - Shims from BNL already exist, the reduce the gap by 6" total. - There are also 'booster coils' and a possibility of running the coils at higher current. See Robin's comments below. 3.0 T.m is allegedly possible at 4kA (claimed to have been done at BNL) - the yoke would be very heavily saturated - not modeled by JLab (AFAIK)
Power supply
- Hall A is purchasing a new power supply for the SBS. We would probably need one for Hall C as well: Danphysik PS 2200A / 290V : $181k - Could borrow this supply if SBS is idle (?) - QTOR supply (9000A / 180V) -- ** should work! ** - NOTE: We have the freedom to run coils in parallel -or- series with this supply. - (We can grab the current leads too.) - BNL coils are already split r+l. - Resistance for one refurbed BNL48D48 120 turn pack verified to be 0.035 ohm by Jack Segal (on-site). This is consistent with documentation suggesting 0.072 ohm/pair (in series). 2000*0.070 = 140V -- just fine running coils in series 2000*0.035 = 70V -- also no problem running in parallel
Update (Dec 2013)
- From discussion with Robin (Hall A) about their experience getting the 48D48 magnet for use with the SBS. The costs below are based on invoiced values from Hall A. - Rough cost estimate to get dipole on-site and assembled $50k (based on following points): - includes shipping from BNL, missing parts (manifolds, leads, bolts, etc), power supply, static stand - see power-supply questions - Shipping: 5 truckloads @ $1300/truck: $8k - BNL Coils were not stored well, their condition is unclear. HOWEVER, JLab is presently refurbishing (acid flush, etc) the coil pack that came with the Hall A SBS magnet. So far these coils are actually looking OK. My understanding is that these old coils would be available for us to use (Hall A is making new coils for the SBS). (- new coils are expensive: ie. $140k for the Hall A SBS) - BNL discarded/lost all the support hardware for the magnets (water, power manifolds, bolts, tension rods, etc). - replacement parts: $15k - Support stand not included: $15k(?)
