+ | - '''Isotopes: '''Not much is happening, waiting for results from the irradiations. I did review Lila’s paper and presentation for IPAC. There was also a useful meeting with Thia, Drew, and our new collaborators to discuss options for IP protection and using PAN’s small business to go after SBIR money.
+ | - '''ERL Roadmap: '''This has taken up a lot of time. I interacted with the section authors to aim the input in the right direction and I am also writing sections. There will be a symposium on ERLs on June 4, where I have a 25’ presentation on ERL Facilities, which I have to prepare. I was asked to Chair a sub-Panel on ERLs for High Energy e+e- colliders. The sub-Panel members have already been invited, and most have accepted (Reinhard Brinkman, Oliver Brüning, Sergei Nagaitsev, Max Klein, Peter Williams and Frank Zimmermann so far). The two projects are an ERL FCC-ee which will be presented by Vladimir Litvinenko, and an ERL ILC which will be presented by Valery Telnov. Both have been contacted and agreed to be reviewed (that was not obvious!). The sub-Panel will start up in June after the ERL Symposium.
+ | - '''PERLE: '''Still no ICRADA!
+ | - '''HiPERLAC:''' I prepared a draft of the full proposal, sent it around for corrections and sent it to Andrei and Mike so they can look at it. Kelly has the budget info. Compared to the preliminary proposal, i have added a student from VCU next summer and a software package. The student will be co-supervised by Prof Supathorn Phongikaroon (Supy) without cost. I had some back and forth with leigh and this was deemed OK. Supy will be part of the team next year when we start to lock down the target area. |

For now, I left the dithering results out of the IPAC material. - We wanted to start beam commissioning of the CEBAF injector upgrade this week, but it was delayed by a series of unfortunate circumstances.

Previous two weeks (Apr 26 - May 10) - Continued work with the Brown-Servranckx transform for round, uncoupled beam from a magnetized beam. This requires some non-conservative process in between the magnetized beam transform and the Brown-Servranckx transform - currently investigating the possibility of using space charge to facilitate this. Looking into the space charge modules in PyORBIT for applicability. Dimensionality of the space charge solver greatly affects the tracked beam sizes - working to understand the proper way to utilize the different space charge solver routines. - Laser particle counter: relocated test apparatus to TL 1011, but still need to work with the Detector group to reassemble the components. Vendor has experienced some shipping delays of hardware components and wants to complete some internal testing before bringing the 12-channel prototype on site - tentatively rescheduled the vendor site visit for the week of May 10. Also working to get a PC dedicated to the particle counter experiments. - Meeting with Omnisensing Photonics to discuss software development progress. - Usual biweekly meeting with Omnisensing Photonics to discuss general progress. - Review of student applications as part of the selection committee for MFURA awards. Next two weeks (May 10 - May 21) - Review of student applications as part of the selection committee for MFURA awards. - Continued work with the Brown-Servranckx transform for round, uncoupled beam from a magnetized beam. Trying to characterize the effects of different forms of the Brown-Servranckx transform, both with and without the 2.5D space charge solver enabled. The 3D space charge solver seems to result in huge, unphysical beams, so still trying to understand this module and its implementation - Laser particle counter: test apparatus has been reassembled in TL 1011. Minor modifications, including moving the vacuum pump off of the bench to the floor, may be necessary as testing resumes. The vendor has received and tested initial hardware components and plans to be on site 5/26 and 5/27, returning once per week on a continuing basis thereafter. - Usual biweekly meeting with Omnisensing Photonics to discuss general progress. - Prepared and gave a short presentation on parametric-resonance ionization cooling (PIC and Skew PIC) concepts, implementation, and challenges as part of the 1st Muon Community Meeting hosted by CERN. Presentation was part of an overall presentation on advanced muon cooling concepts.

Previous two weeks (Apr 26 - May 7) - Vacation: April 10 - April 17 - Isotopes: The Quarterly Report has been written and is being submitted today. We are still trying to understand the data from the irradiations. Our best guess at the moment is that FLUKA 2020, which now calculates Copper67 production correctly, underestimates the production of Gallium67. Since we calculate the amount of Copper67 from the ratio derived from the calibration, the crucible experimental data is a factor of ~2 greater than FLUKA. We are continuing to investigate. I already wrote to you about the new FOA; this was discussed at the Isotope Meeting and our UVA collaborators are on board to take the lead. - ERL Roadmap: The first draft of the report is due mid may, so things are heating up. I have started on my sections, but have a lot more to do. - PERLE: Rumor has it that we are really close. JLab has accepted the latest CNRS edits and the ICRADA has been sent to the DOE for concurrence. In a video conference with Achille Stocchi, Director of IJCLab, and Jean-Luc Biarrotte, CNRS Directorate, Jean-Luc stated that CNRS are ready to sign this version. So maybe we are getting there! - HiPERLAC: new name, the pre-Proposal has been uploaded to the Division site and emailed to Leigh. I have not heard back from BWXT (they have just been named as one of two proposals for micro-reactors for DOE funding and are preparing their next steps) and Framatome (it has been passed to their technical experts). - VCU Engineering Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering: the Industrial Advisory Board met this week. the focus was on changing the course offerings to attract more people to the Department. They have been losing out to computer engineering, including cyber security. They wanted the advice of the local industries as to which courses would be best adapted for hiring, so I was not much use. - VNACA: Also met this week. There was presentation by a policy wonk as to the impact of all of the new initiatives, including the Infrastructure Bill, and the various climate initiatives. Nuclear seems to be well integrated into this as it is now generally seen as a green energy source. Hopefully, this will positively impact approval of HIPERLAC! Next two weeks (May 10 - May 21) - Isotopes: Not much is happening, waiting for results from the irradiations. I did review Lila’s paper and presentation for IPAC. There was also a useful meeting with Thia, Drew, and our new collaborators to discuss options for IP protection and using PAN’s small business to go after SBIR money. - ERL Roadmap: This has taken up a lot of time. - PERLE: Still no ICRADA! - HiPERLAC: I prepared a draft of the full proposal, sent it around for corrections and sent it to Andrei and Mike so they can look at it.
