Vendor visit on 8/19 to start pass/fail test, with current goal to obtain over 90% event detection for 80 um wire sweeping events - still discussing with the vendor on acceptable specifications on false positive event rates. Prior to and during the 8/19 visit, channels 0 and 1 could not be adjusted to give clean event signals using methods that improved SNR for other channels - the sensors for these channels are part of the initial batch and the vendor has decided to replace these sensors before continuing with pass/fail testing. The vendor has also returned the passive optical front end to their labs for fiber connector polishing. Analysis of data taken on 8/19 (wire sweeps and dropping of 50 um aluminum oxide particles) will continue, along with refinement of offline processing algorithms and methods. Will likely give an update on laser particle counter system status to the Detector Group in mid-September.

− | + | - '''Isotopes and Loida: '''while on vacation, I realized that Loida’s program could be easily modified to carry out the same search for new isotope pathways for all of the possible projectiles: neutrons, protons, deuterons and alpha particles. This should enable us to identify possible new pathways for most, if not all of the isotopes on the DOE-ONP Isotope Program “Most Wanted” list. For this, Loida will modify her program and run it for different input conditions. I have arranged with Balśa to pay her for four hours a week through Christmas to do this, in addition to paying her time while she is at AccApp’ 2021 presenting the results. My part will be to provide a written paper based on the results - the intention is to submit it to a refereed journal.
− | + | - '''ERL:''' We had the second meeting of the ERL sub-Panel devoted to discussing the ERLC. At the first meeting, Akira Yamamoto had prepared a 30 slide presentation with cost and power calculations, which we are now looking at offline. Progress will be slow in August due to vacations, but will resume full swing in September. We have been accorded a delay for delivering the conclusion until the end of September. In the meantime, I wrote a draft of our conclusions for the CERC, and sent it around for the sub-Panel members to add, delete or modify. The ERL Panel has not yet resumed looking at the actual roadmap, but will start soon. I know what I think it should be; now I have to persuade my more timid colleagues!
− | + | - '''PERLE ICRADA: '''after about a year, the documents have been returned by the French side and are now with DOE. I do have a concern that with the recent losses in the SRF R&D Department, we may have problems fulfilling our intended scope. This will come up in earnest when the DOE signs the ICRADA. after about a year, the documents have been returned by the French side and are now with DOE. I do have a concern that with the recent losses in the SRF R&D Department, we may have problems fulfilling our intended scope. This will come up in earnest when the DOE signs the ICRADA.
− | + | - I received an invitation to be a Technical Program Committee member for the International Conference on Accelerators for Research and Sustainable Development to be held at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna, Austria, May 23-27, 2022. I advertised this widely, including Stuart (current Chair of ICFA), who suggested that I also send it to Thomas Roser as the Chair of the ICFA Panel on Sustainable Accelerators and Colliders, which I did. Thomas noted that ICFA was not an “invited organization” and I initiated contacts so that ICFA would be included ion the conference.
− | + | '''Next two weeks (Aug 16 - Aug 27)
− | + | - '''Isotopes: '''Loida, Adam and I will continue with the expanded search for medically interesting isotopes. I have written up the first part, which enabled me to check on the computer output and analyze the results in detail. This resulted in removing four of the new pathways for different reasons. Adam Stavola is now working on getting Lila’s code working and will help to integrate it with Loida’s code. I have been preparing a set of input parameters adapted to the cases of gamma, neutron, proton and deuteron. I am still looking for accelerators that use alpha particles for producing isotopes. The only example I have found is the 540 MeV cyclotron at TRIUMF. Since the DOE-ONP Isotope program is not funding this, I guess I can analyze a “foreign” accelerator in the interstate’s of completeness.
− | + | - '''ERL: '''The ERL sub-Panel and ERL Roadmap panel will ramp up activity after the summer vacations. At the second meeting of the ERL sub-Panel, , Kaoru Yokoya presented a first look at the luminosity of the ERLC. He was quickly interrupted by Reinhard Brinkman who pointed out that we cannot consider the linac and damping rings separately. Because the electrons and positrons are returned to the damping rings, damped over 400 turns, and then reused, we have to consider the whole facility as a kind of loop. So we need the momentum compaction factor, transverse tune, chromaticity, synchrotron frequency, etc. I wrote an email to Valery Telnov, got it approved by the members of the sub-Panel, and sent it to Telnov asking if he had considered this and asking if he could supply any additional input.
− | + | - Lila and Loida: I am advising both of them for their graduate studies. Lila wishes to pursue medical physics and I put her in contact with Thia Keppel and Ethan Balkin (who was a medical physicist at the University of Washington before moving to the DOE-ONP Isotope program). Loida wishes to pursue accelerator physics, and I am helping her choose a University. Coming from Puerto Rico, she hates the cold, which does limit her options!
− | - '''Isotopes and Loida: '''while on vacation, I realized that Loida’s program could be easily modified to carry out the same search for new isotope pathways for all of the possible projectiles: neutrons, protons, deuterons and alpha particles. This should enable us to identify possible new pathways for most, if not all of the isotopes on the DOE-ONP Isotope Program “Most Wanted” list. For this, | + | - I will be away a couple of days at the end of next week - needed to reduce my hours to 75%! |

Previous two weeks (Aug 2 - Aug 13) - Isotopes and Loida: while on vacation, I realized that Loida’s program could be easily modified to carry out the same search for new isotope pathways for all of the possible projectiles: neutrons, protons, deuterons and alpha particles. - ERL: We had the second meeting of the ERL sub-Panel devoted to discussing the ERLC. - PERLE ICRADA: after about a year, the documents have been returned by the French side and are now with DOE. - I received an invitation to be a Technical Program Committee member for the International Conference on Accelerators for Research and Sustainable Development to be held at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna, Austria, May 23-27, 2022. Next two weeks (Aug 16 - Aug 27) - Isotopes: Loida, Adam and I will continue with the expanded search for medically interesting isotopes. - ERL: The ERL sub-Panel and ERL Roadmap panel will ramp up activity after the summer vacations. - Lila and Loida: I am advising both of them for their graduate studies. - I will be away a couple of days at the end of next week - needed to reduce my hours to 75%!
