Dr Fanglei Lin is making a lot of e�ort to optimize the lattice that will work best for electron cooling. - Particle tracking simulations with new optimized lattice. Dynamic Aperture (DA), Frequency Map Analysis (FMA) studies were carried out in the new lattice. Next two weeks (Sept 13 - Sept 24) - Will continue the lattice optimization - Will continue - Tracking simulations, Dynamic Aperture calculation, tune shifts calculations etc.

Previous two weeks (Aug 30 - Sept 10) - Laser particle counter: Data analysis of pass/fail testing data taken during last vendor visit. Implementing new algorithm at vendor suggestion that calculates local peak to peak amplitudes in both the amplitude and phase data, and sums the two signals together for improved event detection. Continued algorithm optimization by varying moving window size in the peak to peak calculations, as well as low and high pass filtering effects. Studies of dynamic window and dynamic averaging implementation in data processing applications. The newer 18 sensors have met pass/fail specifications, but the full 24 channel system is incomplete until the initial 6 sensors can be replaced with upgraded versions. The vendor has committed to supplying these upgraded sensors as replacements for the initial 6, and have been authorized to begin work on 24 additional sensors for a full 48 channel system. Delivery of the remaining 6 upgraded sensors for further testing is anticipated in the late September to mid October time frame. Next two weeks (Sept 13 - Sept 24) - Laser particle counter: Found a bug in the data-taking software that erroneously saves one extra bit to random data arrays - vendor has confirmed that this is a software issue and is working to understand why it occurred and how to prevent this in the next version of the GUI. Summarizing current progress in advance of taking extended leave. Preparing content for update on laser particulate counter status at JLAAC in November/December time frame. Vendor anticipates returning with full 24 channel system the week of September 20-24 for continued testing.

Jean Delayen brought up a new effect; with counter-rotating beams in twin-axis cavities, the only way to have both beams on crest is that the cavity spacing is maintained at exactly an integral number of half-wavelengths - hard to achieve during cool-down warm-up and seasonal expansion/contraction. I explained why I didn’t think this was a problem, and this is now grown into an email back and forth! Will let you know the outcome. After we finish the draft, it will have to go to Thomas, Vladimir, and Valery Telnov so they can object - I am expecting fireworks from at least one of them! Again a crisis. - PERLE: We met with Hans Weise of DESY to discuss possible involvement in PERLE; they claim to be saturated, and are not willing to think about working on any other frequency that 1300 MHz - so they are basically abdicating from future high-energy high current colliders.
