Accelerator R and D (Y. Zhang)
Fanglei Lin

 - Worked on testing a hybrid multi bend achromat lattice for the electron collider ring and presented preliminary results in the bi-weekly non-linear beam dynamics meeting.
 - Working simulations in ZGOUBI and reported the progress of electron polarization studies.
 - Miscellaneous: attended JLEIC weekly R&D meetings, attended the JLEIC detector user meeting, attended the JLEIC General meeting, helped Prof. Klaus Heinemann from the University of New Mexico prepare a
   pre-application for the Accelerator Stewardship Award.

Vasiliy Morozov

 - Geometry tagging LDRD: hosting a collaborator, Tobias, having a teleconference with collaborators, working on the next year's proposal.
 - Non-linear dynamics: teleconference with SLAC, editing Guohui's paper.
 - Detector design: working on a generic detector RnD proposal, working on the optics of the interaction region, in particular, studying options of the first spectrometer dipole design.
 - Miscellaneous: muon cooling, positron working group activities, seminar committee activities.

Amy Sy

 - Trying to inject high energy beam into bent toroid section; compensating for transverse deflections from transverse field components inside the merger to determine injection point and angle. Included space charge effects in the low energy beam; space charge appears to degrade the longitudinal phase space the most, but need a better understanding of how to preserve the initial longitudinal phase space.  
 - Searched for unwanted resonances in the uncoupled channel as a way to explain the loss of parametric resonant behavior in the coupled case with RF included; concluded that RF does not excite unwanted resonances in the uncoupled case, so the loss of parametric resonant behavior in the coupled case is likely due to the introduction of vertical dispersion.  Extracted dispersion components from the one turn matrix to try to locally compensate the dispersion components during particle tracking.
 - Held a teleconference with ANL collaborators to discuss polarized ion source efforts. ANL collaborators plan to pursue internal funding to build a polarized ion source for ATLAS, but seek guidance on building a source that aligns with JLEIC needs. Suggested a collaborative effort pursuing SBIR funds to leverage Muons, Inc. experience.

Guohui Wei

 - Simulate study of ePb collision in JLEIC ion forward detection. New version of GEMC was studied. This new version can read in generated events output from BEAGLE directly.
 - DA with detector solenoid for the JLEIC ion collider ring at injection mode.
 - Writing A journal paper of "Integration of the full-acceptance detector at the JLEIC"

Yuhong Zhang

 - Explored DC cooling in the collider ring
 - Participated analyses of bunched beam cooling experiment data
 - Prepare a review talk on bunched beam electron cooling for EICUG 2017
 - Started organization of EIC Collaboration Meeting 2017

Computational Phyics (Y. Roblin)
He Zhang

  • Improve the model beam method. Keep working on improving the model beam method for bunched electron cooling when electron bunch is smaller than the ion bunch.
  • Performed simulations for DC cooler at 8GeV. Existing cooling solenoids for the bunched beam cooler can be used for a DC cooler at 8GeV. a 2A electron beam is sufficient to cool the proton beam efficiently.
  • User interface for JSPEC
  • JSPEC has no user interface now. For each new calculation/simulation, I needs to edit the main function and compile the code, before I can run it. This work just started.
  • Paper on heat load and trip rate optimization. Spend significant time on writing it. Has put a lot of things together. But still far away from finish.
  • Interview panel for postdoc position.

SURI summer student

  • Zachary has started to develop C++ codes for IBS expansion rate calculation. The good thing is he has made some progress. So far he has finished a function for some intermediate calculation, with my help of fixing some coding errors. If he keeps going, I think there is still a good chance to finish the project.

Yves Roblin

  • Prepared slides for S&T
  • Worked out the relationship between Optim and ELEGANT/MAD-X regarding the modeling of fringe fields in dipoles at big angles and short lengths.
  • Modified the prototype PERLE lattice to account for that. Made a one turn version of it in ELEGANT and transmitted to Chris for evaluation
  • Reviewing a PRL paper (high priority, I am the third reviewer and they want it quickly)
  • Setup a code repository for CASA. It is hosted at https//github.com/JeffersonLab/casa_tools. We created a CASA team. This GIT is paid for by the computer center and is secure. Many of the nuclear physicists are using that now.
  • Contacted Werner Herr (cern) and got a copy of COMBI which is a code designed to calculated gear changes and beam beam effects due to uneven bunch patterns.
  • In the process of installing, communicating with Tatiana Pelioni (the original author who developed it for her PhD)
  • setting up the 4 on 3 bunch beam problem in MAD-X to attempt to reproduce the gear changing paper results.

Diagnostic Development (K. Jordan)
Kevin Jordan:

  • I worked on the RadiaBeam and AlphaCore SBIR/CRADAs
  • Attended users meeting
  • Took thermal data on isotope mock-up, and working on new isotope irradiation fixture, and instrumentation upgrade
  • worked with Joe on understanding problems with 3C12 SLM

Joe Gubeli:

  • He worked on the design and model for ISR3C12, 2C20
  • He had the Hippo laser control machine rebuilt and reinstalled software
  • Worked to finalize budget for Radiabeam SBIR/CRADA.

Mike Tiefenback:

  • I prepared and presented an accelerator update for the CLAS12 Collaboration. The collaboration chairman polled the members for what they wanted to hear about. The answer was "how much and what energy beam will we get?" Not much else. As a result, my talk was focused on "What gets in the way of beam delivery," "How are we working toward fixing that," and "How are we doing?"
  • I've also been collecting SR diagnostic ideas, dusting off the X-ray pinhole topic I used to suggest to people when the SR interferometer was starting to be in vogue (it's doing well for the people who had resources they could devote to the topic), while quietly moaning to myself about mass flow metrology and what we could be doing there.
