Max Bruker

  Previous (Mar 1 - Mar 12)
     - HDice run. I wouldn't say it was entirely without issues, but overall we can't complain. Apart from occasional RF trips, the biggest annoyance is that the
orbit is not constant enough by itself and you have to re-steer it every few hours.
  Next (Mar 15 - Mar 26)
     - Participate in other UITF activities. The schedule is not 100% clear yet and largely depends on the availability of LHe.

Previous two weeks (Mar 1 - Mar 12)
     - Report writing and submission for the DOE/SC Review of Mu2e.
     - Laser particle counter: continued literature search on micron sized particle delivery. Detector group is working to dismantle the current test setup to reclaim their lab
space - the process will be documented, and the group will provide support for reassembly in the new test bed location. Understanding previous data from the commercial (Wexx)
particle counter to enable calibration of the prototype counters to be delivered. Vendor is planning to deliver the two prototype counters together in a single site visit due to COVID-19.
     - Biweekly meeting with Omnisensing Photonics on detector prototype progress.
Next two weeks (Mar 15 - Mar 26)
     - Laser particle counter: continued literature search on micron sized particle delivery. Detector group has dismantled the current test setup and provided photos of the setup
before and after disassembly. Understanding previous data from the commercial (Wexx) particle counter to enable calibration of the prototype counters to be delivered. Vendor
anticipates several weeks of additional schedule delay due to underestimating effort needed to develop software for data acquisition and analysis, but is currently implementing
a new "acceleration" based algorithm for particle detection.
    - Biweekly meeting with Omnisensing Photonics on detector prototype progress.
    - Revisiting magnetized ion beam from magnetized ion sources to better understand current progress and limitations.

Andrew Hutton

Previous two weeks (Mar 1 - Mar 12)
     - EIC: again, not much. I need to find a topic I can get my teeth into. That may have to wait until the JLab deliverables are defined.
     - Isotopes: I met virtually with Dongfeng Pan and Mahendra Chordia of UVA and Tyvin Rich of the HU Proton Therapy Institute, following which I sent them our original proposal which had the separation “recipe” spelled out in detail. I am waiting to hear back from UVA. Tyvin invited me to a face-to-face meeting (my first in almost a year!) and he enthusiastically wants to be part of the team. He has collaborated for years with Pan and Mahendra, so i think he will convince them to join. This would create an extremely strong team. At the moment, I am laying low until they formally ask to join. We are making significant progress in understanding the irradiation data with Adam Stavola and the two NMT students working closely together, with Doug Wells guiding.
     - ERLs: I have continued to make progress on the spreadsheet (see the latest version, attached). We had the first Panel meeting and got buy-in for the plans. Max Klein had prepared a layout of the report that we have to write and we are now waiting for volunteers to write the various sections - we actually already have some! We are currently preparing for the next meeting. We are being asked to organize a “public” information meeting sometime in June. The meeting will be virtual and require some organization.
     - PERLE: I have made some progress with the ICRADA by finding out who is the person at IN2P3 in charge of the agreements and going to him directly. There may actually be light at the end of the tunnel!
     - I have canceled participation in the student collaboration with VCU Nuclear Engineering, VUU and Sweetbriar as requested by Stuart and Andrei. I managed to do it without creating too much trauma, so I can look for other collaboration opportunities.
     - New Accelerator Facility: I have continued to flesh out my idea and have emailed to prospective Users: Supy at VCU Engineering (they are in) and Doug Wells at NMT (an enthusiastic YES), and contacts at Framatome and BWXT (waiting to hear back). I should be able to present something in a couple of weeks.
     - I got my second Moderna vaccine shot on Friday, March 12, so I should be fully protected by the end of the month.
Next two weeks (Mar 15 - Mar 26)
     - Isotopes: I met via BlueJeans with my REU student, Loida Rosado Del Rio, on Wednesday for the first time. She seems enthusiastic about working as the Editor on our next proposal. I also had a large meeting on Friday with our new collaborators from UVA and HU, Loida and our existing team from JLab and NMT, so that everyone could introduce themselves. I think we now have a powerful team and are much better placed to get funded. We will start attacking the proposal at the beginning of May when Loida officially starts. We are close to finalizing the 50 kW crucible design (Joe and Pavel Degtiarenko) to a level sufficient to close out the Milestone for our existing proposal. This will be “recycled” as input to the new proposal. This week, I will start preparing the APS talk that will be given by Steve.
     - ERLS: this is proceeding smoothly. I have asked several JLab staff members for short write-ups and have got positive answers from all - including George Neil even though he is retired! Max presented our input to the European Lab Directors Group and it was well received. We will need to organize a public meeting sometime this summer.
     - I have been approached by VCU Nuclear Engineering Group to participate in a request for student funding on Isotope studies. The other collaborators are Virginia Union University (an HBCU) and Sweet Briar College (an all women’s university).
     - PERLE: No news is not necessarily good news.
     - New Accelerator Facility - no response from Stuart or Andrei, so I am moving forward. I have a meeting with the Business Development Manager for Advanced Technologies at BWX Technologies, Inc. this afternoon to explore areas where we might collaborate.
