=== Locking up the hall on Fridays ===
 +
* At 2pm check the status of the activities in the hall and notify RC if there are potential delays for the lockup at 3pm.
 +
* Work with the hall work coordinator (Doug Tilles or his designee) to make sure hall is ready for sweep at around 3pm:
 +
** Vacuum is good, magnet power supplies are turned ON and in remote mode, LCW is on.
 +
* Make sure experts, beamline, ECal, SVT, and slow controls, checked their systems before the lockup.
 +
* When ready notify MCC to start sweep and lockup of the hall.
 +
* Make sure all necessary monitoring GUIs are up and running.
 +
* Make sure beam viewer screens are up.
 +
* When hall reaches "Beam Permit":
 +
**  [https://wiki.jlab.org/hps-run/images/c/cd/Chicane_controls.pdf turn on the chicane]
 +
** <font color='red'>Turn SVT completely OFF (Bias, FEB, Flange)</font>

===Establishing Acceptable Beam Conditions:===
 +
# <font color='red'>'''Make sure SVT is retracted and both SVT and ECAL are OFF.'''</font>
 +
# <b>First send beam to the tagger dump:</b>
 +
#* Check that beam type is set to "Photon" (<tt>HPS_EPICS->Beam->BTA</tt>).
 +
#* Ask MCC to turn ON the tagger magnet and then deliver <10 nA beam.
 +
#* Check the beam position on the tagger viewer, it should be approximately in the centre of the screen
 +
#* Follow instructions under "Procedures" on the documentation tab for "Beamline"[https://wiki.jlab.org/hps-run/images/e/e6/HPS_beamline_comm.pdf]. To tune the beam on tagger dump and perform harp scans beam current should be <10 nA.
 +
#* Check profile using 2C21 and tagger harp scans, and compare the positions and widths with previous scans ([https://logbooks.jlab.org/entry/3388429],[https://logbooks.jlab.org/entry/3388441])
 +
#** Positions on both harps should be within 1mm
 +
#** Width on 2C21 should be <~0.1+/-0.05 mm
 +
#** Width on tagger harp (2C24) <~0.35 +/- 0.1mm
 +
#* Halo counters UPS-L/R and TAG-L/T/T2 should be ~few Hz/nA [https://logbooks.jlab.org/entry/3376736]
 +
<!-- # <b> While MCC degausses the tagger magnet, verify that chicane is ON</b>
 +
#* If not, turn it on.  Strictly follow the procedure in the beam line manual!-->
 +
# ''' Before sending beam to the Faraday cup '''
 +
#* Check that chicane GUI says "Chicane Ready"
 +
#* ''' Check that SVT protection collimator is ON '''
 +
#* HPS target is '''OUT''' and ECAL HV is '''OFF'''
 +
#* SVT is OUT (position=0.000 mm in main hps scaler screen) and HV is off (all red/green indicators RED in SVT bias GUI)
 +
#* If any uncertainty, page the experts
 +
#* The first time sending beam to the Faraday cup after the hall is closed, page the SVT expert.
 +
#* Pay attention into following corrector values: 2C22H, 2C23V, 2H00H, 2H00V, Compare them to ones that are  in [https://logbooks.jlab.org/entry/3394957]. Make sure their values doesn't differ more than 100%. If there is a such difference, tell MCC about this.
 +
# ''' Send beam to the Faraday cup '''
 +
#* If the beam optics is correct, then you should immediately see the beam spot on the Downstream Viewer and beam position and on 2H00 and 2H02 BPMS.
 +
#* If you don't see it immediately, and rates on halo counters are more than 100 Khz, then ask MCC, to change to pulsed (tune mode) beam, and ask to put corrector values. At this point don't accept any CW beam, until beam spot is visible on Downstream Viewer.
 +
#* If MCC operator is not able to tune the beam more than 30 minutes, then please notify RC
 +
<!-- #* Follow the instructions under "Procedures" on the documentation tab for "Beamline"[https://wiki.jlab.org/hps-run/images/e/e6/HPS_beamline_comm.pdf] to establish beam to the electron dump. -->
 +
<b> Note: in order to have reliable readings on two important for HPS BPMs, 2H00 and 2H02, beam current should be >30 nA.</b>
 +
#* Ask MCC to establish 30 nA beam with <font color=red>HPS</font> orbit locks on (We need '''HallBHPSOrb''' not '''HallBOrb''' configuration). <b>For orbit lock positions on <font color=red>2H00(X=0.00,Y=0.00) and on 2H02(X=-1.00,Y=-0.85). Use the 2.82 mm SVT collimator. </font></b>.
 +
#* Tune beam profile at HPS using measured widths on 2H02A harp. The required beam profile at 2H02A harp is: X-width <~0.25 mm, Y-width <~ 0.10 mm for commissioning, and Y-width ~0.05 for physics running, and the tilt angle <15 degrees.
 +
#* Check and log the beam spot on chromax viewer
 +
#* The halo counter rates before HPS must be low:
 +
#*# UPS-L and UPS-R few Hz/nA,
 +
#*# The tagger counters should count less than Hz/nA and downstream counters should count ~Hz/nA
 +
#*# The halo counter rates on HPS, HPS-L/R/T/SC, depends on the collimator and HPS chicane settings, but should not be more than 100 Hz/nA [https://logbooks.jlab.org/entry/3328991]
 +
#* Positions on BPMs must be close to what they were before [https://logbooks.jlab.org/entry/3376894]
 +
#* Once all the above is achieved, turn ECAL HV '''ON''' to monitor and log ECal rates
 +
#* Insert the 4um W target without turning off the beam.
 +
# '''Before accepting beam, make sure all the previous conditions are met. Always read previous log entries, compare settings of BPMs and correctors with previous settings using scaler_hps GUI.'''
 +
 +
=== Setting up the FSD threshold ===
 +
*When you are about to calculate FSD limit, it means the beam is already established, and the target is in.
 +
* To calculate the FSD threshold run the folloing executable
 +
hpsrun@clonpc11> /home/hpsrun/scripts/FSD/Calc_FSD_Threshold.exe
 +
* Note we use 1 ms integration time, and want 5.5 sigma away from the average rates
 +
* Allowed tolerable rate increase default is 15%, if that causes many trips, then contact RC, he might suggest to increase that number
 +
* <font color='red'> Make sure if MCC operator set the FSD limit and integration time correctly </font>

PDL: Eugene Pasyuk

  • (757) 876-1789
  • 9 876-1789 from Counting Room

Straight tracks run: April 25, 4:30 AM

  • Chikane magnets are OFF
  • Target is out
  • Current 50 nA
  • Trigger "straight.trg"
  • Use 2H02 Harp as a target
  • Tune trigger rate to 15 kHz by 2H02 harp wire position
  • Take data up to 6:00AM

Run Plan for April 22 - 25, 2016 (every weekend):

Start close-up of the Hall at 3pm on Friday, April 22

  • See General Instructions on the right for details

When hall enters Beam Permit, turn on the chicane

Establish beam to the tagger dump

  1. See "General Instructions" on the right for details
  2. Log screenshots of the ECal and main HPS scaler screens for reference when beam is established at the tagger

Bring beam to FC:

  1. Note: in order to have reliable readings on two important for HPS BPMs, 2H00 and 2H02, beam current should be >30 nA. Before moving forward with 2H02A harp scans and beam profile tune, make sure orbit lock is engaged at positions on 2H00(X=0.00,Y=0.00) and on 2H02(X=-1.1,Y=-1.).
  2. Important Note: Before bringing beams to the FC, be sure that the SVT and ECal are off, the SVT fully retracted, the target out, and the 2.82 mm SVT collimator is in. All beam studies should be done in these conditions with beam currents of 30 nA.
  3. Establish beam to the Faraday cup following the "General Guidelines" on the right. The required beam profile at 2H02A harp is: X-width <~0.25 mm, Y-width <~ 0.050 mm, and the tilt angle <15 degrees. The spot on the Chromax viewer should be close to x=-2mm, y=-5mm. Also make sure that Harp scans reproduce recent mean values of Beam X and and Y [1]. Vertically should be within 50 um match, horizontally 300 um should be enough.
  4. Restore ECal and Trigger
    • Turn on ECal
    • Record FADC rates with and without the 4 um target at 200 nA.
    • Call ECal expert to perform pedestal run
    • Trigger/DAQ expert checks trigger rates, DAQ, and deadtime with 200 nA beam on 4 um target. Record:
      1. main scaler screen
      2. ecal scaler gui
      3. trigger rate gui (requires DAQ Prestarted with v8_200nA.trg)
        • Live time should be >~90%
        • Total Trigger rate should be ~17 kHz.
  5. SVT Setting (call SVT expert in)
    • If beams are stable, SVT expert moves SVT to 1.0 and then 0.5 mm
    • record occupancy, latency, data size, and deadtimes
  6. Record Production Data with 4um target @ 200 nA
    • Use Configuration HPS35 and Trigger v8_200nA.trg.
    • 150 Million events per run
    • Be sure to follow General Guidelines, especially instructions for Every Shift and Every Run below.
    • Monitor and record BPM 2H02 history carefully to insure stable beams.
      • If beams are not stable, get MCC to fix it!
    • Document any beam condition change and send scaler GUIs to HBLOG
  7. Special (to be scheduled by RC)
    • 3.93 mm collimator
      • Scan to center it (update epics records)
      • Empty target run to compare rates with 2.82 mm collimator
    • Quick no-collimator rate measurement

Monday at 6:am

    • Call MCC to take the beam Off, and request a Restricted Access
    • Turn All SVT voltages Off (From SVT Summary GUI):
      • FEB ALL "OFF"
      • ALL SVT FLANGE "OFF"
      • ALL HYBRIDS "OFF"
      • ALL SVT BIAS "OFF"
    • Retract SVT stages to "Retracted" position
    • Turn the Chicane Off
    • Retract the target
  1. Take LED run according to this instructions (Sec. 8.2 and 8.3) [2]
    • Turn the ECal HV Off

Important Notes:

  1. Do not run more than 60 minutes above 30 nA without the beam blocker in front of Faraday cup. Put beam blocker in for long running at high currents.

SVT RECOVERY PROCDURES

General Instructions:

DAQ RECOVERY

Locking up the hall on Fridays

  • At 2pm check the status of the activities in the hall and notify RC if there are potential delays for the lockup at 3pm.
  • Work with the hall work coordinator (Doug Tilles or his designee) to make sure hall is ready for sweep at around 3pm:
    • Vacuum is good, magnet power supplies are turned ON and in remote mode, LCW is on.
  • Make sure experts, beamline, ECal, SVT, and slow controls, checked their systems before the lockup.
  • When ready notify MCC to start sweep and lockup of the hall.
  • Make sure all necessary monitoring GUIs are up and running.
  • Make sure beam viewer screens are up.
  • When hall reaches "Beam Permit":

Establishing Acceptable Beam Conditions:

  1. Make sure SVT is retracted and both SVT and ECAL are OFF.
  2. First send beam to the tagger dump:
    • Check that beam type is set to "Photon" (HPS_EPICS->Beam->BTA).
    • Ask MCC to turn ON the tagger magnet and then deliver <10 nA beam.
    • Check the beam position on the tagger viewer, it should be approximately in the centre of the screen
    • Follow instructions under "Procedures" on the documentation tab for "Beamline"[4]. To tune the beam on tagger dump and perform harp scans beam current should be <10 nA.
    • Check profile using 2C21 and tagger harp scans, and compare the positions and widths with previous scans ([5],[6])
      • Positions on both harps should be within 1mm
      • Width on 2C21 should be <~0.1+/-0.05 mm
      • Width on tagger harp (2C24) <~0.35 +/- 0.1mm
    • Halo counters UPS-L/R and TAG-L/T/T2 should be ~few Hz/nA [7]
  3. Before sending beam to the Faraday cup
    • Check that chicane GUI says "Chicane Ready"
    • Check that SVT protection collimator is ON
    • HPS target is OUT and ECAL HV is OFF
    • SVT is OUT (position=0.000 mm in main hps scaler screen) and HV is off (all red/green indicators RED in SVT bias GUI)
    • If any uncertainty, page the experts
    • The first time sending beam to the Faraday cup after the hall is closed, page the SVT expert.
    • Pay attention into following corrector values: 2C22H, 2C23V, 2H00H, 2H00V, Compare them to ones that are in [8]. Make sure their values doesn't differ more than 100%. If there is a such difference, tell MCC about this.
  4. Send beam to the Faraday cup
    • If the beam optics is correct, then you should immediately see the beam spot on the Downstream Viewer and beam position and on 2H00 and 2H02 BPMS.
    • If you don't see it immediately, and rates on halo counters are more than 100 Khz, then ask MCC, to change to pulsed (tune mode) beam, and ask to put corrector values. At this point don't accept any CW beam, until beam spot is visible on Downstream Viewer.
    • If MCC operator is not able to tune the beam more than 30 minutes, then please notify RC

Note: in order to have reliable readings on two important for HPS BPMs, 2H00 and 2H02, beam current should be >30 nA.

    • Ask MCC to establish 30 nA beam with HPS orbit locks on (We need HallBHPSOrb not HallBOrb configuration). For orbit lock positions on 2H00(X=0.00,Y=0.00) and on 2H02(X=-1.00,Y=-0.85). Use the 2.82 mm SVT collimator. .
    • Tune beam profile at HPS using measured widths on 2H02A harp. The required beam profile at 2H02A harp is: X-width <~0.25 mm, Y-width <~ 0.10 mm for commissioning, and Y-width ~0.05 for physics running, and the tilt angle <15 degrees.
    • Check and log the beam spot on chromax viewer
    • The halo counter rates before HPS must be low:
      1. UPS-L and UPS-R few Hz/nA,
      2. The tagger counters should count less than Hz/nA and downstream counters should count ~Hz/nA
      3. The halo counter rates on HPS, HPS-L/R/T/SC, depends on the collimator and HPS chicane settings, but should not be more than 100 Hz/nA [9]
    • Positions on BPMs must be close to what they were before [10]
    • Once all the above is achieved, turn ECAL HV ON to monitor and log ECal rates
    • Insert the 4um W target without turning off the beam.
  1. Before accepting beam, make sure all the previous conditions are met. Always read previous log entries, compare settings of BPMs and correctors with previous settings using scaler_hps GUI.

Setting up the FSD threshold

  • When you are about to calculate FSD limit, it means the beam is already established, and the target is in.
  • To calculate the FSD threshold run the folloing executable
hpsrun@clonpc11> /home/hpsrun/scripts/FSD/Calc_FSD_Threshold.exe
  • Note we use 1 ms integration time, and want 5.5 sigma away from the average rates
  • Allowed tolerable rate increase default is 15%, if that causes many trips, then contact RC, he might suggest to increase that number
  • Make sure if MCC operator set the FSD limit and integration time correctly

Every Shift:

  1. Follow run plan as outlined by RC
  2. If any concern about beam stability, ask MCC if orbit locks are on (they should be).
  3. Keep shift summary up to date in HBLOG. Record all that happens.
    • Check on white board all scalers, strip charts and monitoring plots that need to be logged regularly
    • Document any beam condition change and send scaler GUIs to HBLOG
    • Fill out BTA hourly. Click "Load from EPICS" to automatically fill the left side.
    • Fill and submit the shift checklist in the logbook
  4. Perform 2H02A harp scan once per shift or when beam conditions have changed, based on beam monitors (BPMs, halo rates, beam-viewer). During harp scans SVT must be retracted and HV should be OFF.
  5. With any issue contact On-Call Experts or RC

Every Run:

  1. After "Go": Check SVT Occupancy
  2. Update the Run Spreadsheet
  3. Log screenshots of:
    • main scaler_hps display
    • ECAL FADC rate gui
    • Trigger rate gui
    • SVT and ECAL Monitoring pdfs
    • Put the output of the following command hpsTiStatus.sh into the logbook
  4. After each run execute this script (replace RunNb by the actual run number):
    • hps2tapeAndDelete.sh RunNb
  5. All trigger files to be used by shifters are in HPS/Run2016
