NPS DEINSTALLATION DISCUSSION

NPS APPROVED SCIENCE PROGRAM AND FUTURE USE OF NPS

  • Next time use of NPS?
  • no sooner than 4-5 years from now
  • There is an approved NPS science program, several LOIs, and new ideas to be submitted to PAC. There are experiments that use:
  • (5 approved experiments) NPS at small angles using SHMS as carriage (run group 1a and 1b) and HMS
  • (2 approved experiments) NPS at large angles using SHMS as carriage (on the other side to run group 1a) and HMS
  • (1 approved experiment) NPS at large angles and the Compact Photon Source
  • (1 approved experiment) NPS reconfigured as part of an ECAL+HCAL system downstream from the target
  • (1 conditionally approved experiment) NPS + positrons
  • currently 2 LOIs and 1 experiment being developed for NPS/NPS+CPS
  • When to run Compton Scattering unpolarized with NPS and SHMS/HMS?
  • Note this is an approved experiment that requires the NPS (but NOT the CPS)
  • Needs further discussion
  • Action: make a plan for the next time using the NPS
  • meet with Mark and others to discuss about scheduling which of NPS run groups to run first
  • ordering is important as some experiments need NPS in its present configuration and some need reconfiguration
  • different configurations need different considerations

NPS DEINSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS

  • De-cabling between 5/20 and 6/3 at JLab
  • students if possible
  • special training needed?
  • read EPAS and sign document
  • Plan on what cables need to be dismounted first etc.
  • usually damage happens to connectors - try to connect cable ends (plastic foam and bag around it and put ties)
  • Cables from patch to SHMS - permanent, will stay
  • HV cables will come out
  • LED cables come out

NPS STORAGE CONSIDERATIONS

  • Near term plan: Keep all items together, do proper labeling
  • need to have capability to test detector in the storage location or in another designated location
  • no work planned over the next year for NPS - so can store
  • What access is needed to NPS starting from approximately one year from now (estimate) - needs to be figured out so that can decide if anything needs to be modified
  • Do we have procedures for installing NPS for future reference
  • example: pay attention to rails - detector moves smoothly on them - should install like that again
  • have pictures, have movies, but presently no written documentation
  • have a plan and that was followed
  • Action: make (rough) documentation for installing NPS
  • NPS components storage plans and requirements - Walter's team plans to store the detector in ESB in roped off(?) area
  • detector and framework (and side shielding?)
  • cables, cable trays,
  • magnets - flush lines, etc.
  • rails - must be treated, coated to not rust, should be inside
  • platform - can be outside, must be painted with anti-rust liquids (storage details not yet in schedule - assumed to get done after deinstallation)
  • beam line? - store in physics storage building (storage details need to add to schedule)
  • Cooling system in detector
  • purge it, keep anti-freeze in
  • make maintenance plan - flush out every year
  • same with air handling system
  • Actions and near term plan:
  • make a site map to keep track of NPS components; plan for annual inspection of the NPS components
  • make maintenance plan for some of the NPS components, e.g., cooling system and air handling system
  • store equipment, mark and label everthing
  • document procedures
  • make a plan for the next time using the NPS - start with

JLAB OPEN HOUSE AND NPS

  • Figure out how NPS should look like for JLab Open House on June 8th, 2024

NEXT MEETING: 22 FEBRUARY 2024 AT 9AM ET
