DESY BEAM TEST WITH FULL SIPM READOUT CHAIN
- Presentation by Douglas about the facility and previous measurement with 5x5 crystal prototype with PMT readout
- The focus areas of a beam test later this year would be:
- full SiPM chain test to
- energy resolution with realistic mechanical structure, e.g., including the carbon structure
- DESY has a test beam facility that is well organized and user friendly - the slides list requirements on training, shipping, and suggested length of test beam period (2 weeks), staffing (need at least 6 people), shipping (should arrive ~1 week before test beam period), etc.
- Groups that plan to participate:
- AANL: 2 people
- MIT: 2 people
- IJCLab-Orsay: 2 people
- CUA
- Other
- Prototypes that could be used or modified with SiPM
- MIT: 5x5 PWO + PMT
- IJCLAB-ORSAY: 5x5
- AANL: 4x4
- Other prototypes: CUA/JLAB: 3x3 + PMT, 3x3 + SiPM, 5x5 + SiPM (requires modifications); Crytur USA: 5x5 + SiPM
- Action items:
- find out from Gerard if boards for the fADC readout will be ready before October - depends also on the irradiation studies, e.g., if irradiation results only available in August is there enough time to make the boards? (Justin check with Gerard)
- prepare DESY application by 4/12
DISCUSSION TDR preparations
- Backward ECal TDR planning slide was presented on 2/21/24 - some items were marked as "lots to do"
- Detector design: test beam results (pertaining to read-out chain tests)
- Read-out: Radiation tests
- Read-out: FEB
- As part of the preparations now further detail on the timeline for these items was requested
- Read-out: Radiation tests
- Giessen U. - Larry sent SiPM 3010/3015 to Giessen U. for parasitic test at hadron irradiation facility in the week of April 12th. The Giessen U. group will try to include our SiPMs in their own tests as possible
- Follow up with UMass/Lowell - requires investment of ~$4k for one irradiation
- Discussions with UC Riverside - test currently anticipated for August
- Detector design: test beam results - these are crystal+SiPM readout chain tests
- CERN: March/April - initial tests
- CERN: July - initial tests; depends on successful coordination with Italian colleagues
- DESY: requires submission of a request; consider a beam period in September/October so that have results for the calorimeter final design review (90%) planned for November/December 2024
- JLAB: available anytime (parasitic with main experiment in Hall D) after October 2024
- Read-out: FEB
- design should be done in Fall 2024 - confident for ASICS, but need to check on the fADC option
- Constraints:
- need to decide on SiPM before full readout chain tests with beam
- results from beam tests should be available for final design review (90%) planned for November/December 2024
- Action items:
- prepare/finalize the slide for TIC group
MECHANICAL DESIGN
- Generally in good shape
- Without additional information on dimensions of detectors and structures around the EEEMCAL it is not possible to make more progress - waiting for this information
SUMMER STUDENT PROJECTS
- Did not discuss in detail - will get back to this at the next meeting
- In principle, FIU has 2-4 students and JMU also has summer students that could work on EEEMCAL related projects
NEXT MEETING: FRIDAY 19 APRIL AT 8AM ET
