FUNDING PROPOSALS

  • 2015 NSF MRI was selected for an award
  • Discussion about Glasgow proposal budget: limited to ~$50k, emphasis is on WACS-specific requirements
  • EIC crystal calorimeter R&D project has been submitted; decisions will be made in July

SUMMARY OF MAIN PWO DISCUSSION POINTS FROM MEETINGS WITH RAINER

  • Studies show that fission/spallation due to hadrons above threshold result in unrecoverable damage of PWO crystals. Discussion about impact of this on "recycling" CMS crystals. At JLab the dominant damage comes from EM sources and this damage is recoverable
  • Discussion about the need to continue crystal R&D for EIC electron endcap calorimeter
  • Rainer's analysis of a batch of crystals produced at SICCAS in early 2015 is consistent with our recent findings, i.e., the more recent crystals seem to be of better quality. Batch-to-batch variation needs to be investigated.
  • Optical properties and radiation hardness of the first full-size crystal from CRYTUR look good
  • Comparison of Rainer's results for our crystals #2, 3, 6, 8, and 9 suggest:
  • crystals seem radiation hard (crystals with exception of #2 pass the specifications)
  • longitudinal transmittance results seem different - ongoing investigation on why this is, e.g., difference in crystal orientation during measurement
  • Infrastructure setup for crystal testing at universities
  • Orsay: next steps include LY measurements, calibration of fiber spectrometer, and identifying options for irradiation
  • CUA: next steps include LY measurement, temperature controlled setup
  • Discussion about temperature selection for NPS
  • Best solution seems to be between 10 and 20 degrees. Quantitative checks on exact temperature ongoing
  • Discussion about global plans for evaluating crystals
  • To analyze systematic effects crystals will be analyzed at universities and also at Giessen, BNL and/or Caltech
  • Radiation damage effects
  • Action item: to evaluate batch-to-batch variations try to get information on serial numbers from company (Hamlet)
  • Discussion about follow-up visit in Giessen this fall to learn about the details of the setup there

PMT BASES AND ELECTRONICS

  • Ongoing work at ODU to explore Cockcroft-Walton bases as alternative bases. Action item: give one of the R4125s to Charles for testing (Arthur)
  • fADC readout is being setup for testing at JLab. Action item: give one crystal to Alex for testing in setup (Arthur)

NPS TALK AT SUMMER HA/HC MEETING: 17-18 JULY 2015

  • Action item: if anyone is interested in giving this talk let TH know.

ITEMS FOR NEXT MEETING:

  • Readout and trigger electronics (Alex)
  • Updates on crystal studies
  • Updates on funding
  • TAC and theory reports of PAC43 submissions
  • Other...

NEXT MEETING: FRI, 17 JULY, TIME: TBA
