Overview of Configurations (June 2021)

  • Location: IP6, IP8
  • Configuration: 1.5T (ECCE), 2.0T (CORE), 3T (ATHENA)
  • Location of EEEMCAL: inside or outside DIRC

Location and number of radiator modules

  • ATHENA:
  • z = 195cm
  • R_in = 11 cm (eta ~ -3.5) = R_min_PWO
  • R_max_PWO = 53cm (eta ~2) = R_min_Glass
  • R_max_total = 100 cm (eta ~ 1.4) = R_max_Glass
  • Modules PWO = ~ 2200 (2 x 2 x 20 cm3)
  • Modules Glass = ~ 1400 (4 x 4 x 40 cm3)
  • Total weight: ~ 2400 kg
  • If assume all PWO for this volume: 7600 PWO modules
  • Weight ~ 7000 kg
  • ECCE:
  • z = 190 cm
  • R_min = 11cm (eta ~3.5) = R_min_PWO
  • R_max_PWO = 49cm (eta ~2) = R_min_Glass
  • R_max_total = 57 cm (eta ~1.9) = R_max_Glass
  • Modules PWO = 1680 (2 x 2 x 20 cm3)
  • Modules Glass = 160 (4 x 4 x 40 cm3)
  • Total weight: ~1500 kg
  • If assume all PWO for this volume: 2960 PWO modules
  • Total weight ~ 2000kg
  • CORE
  • z = 110cm
  • R_min=8.5cm
  • R_max=47cm
  • Modules PWO = 1412 (2 x 2 x 20 cm3)
  • Total weight ~ 1000kg

Mechanical aspects

  • Maintenance
  • Detector maintenance will be done outside the hall using the mechanism illustrated in these videos:
  • How many parts of the detector?
  • One part EEEMCal (Athena and ECCE)
  • Must we take out the detector?
  • All major maintenance will be performed outside the hall
  • Where will the detector be mounted?
  • On the universal ("DIRC") frame for both Athena and ECCE
  • What is keeping the crystals/glass blocks in place?
  • Carbon structure between crystals (individual or matrix) - need to know what minimum thickness is required mechanically.
  • Where is the detector located?
  • Inside DIRC for both Athena and ECCE
  • Detector location in z: z=195cm (Athena), z=190cm (ECCE)
  • Detector dimensions:
  • Athena: Rmin=15cm, Rmax=100cm
  • ECCE: Rmin=11cm, Rmax=57cm (support radius=61cm)
  • Cooling:
  • Need to have as much active area (crystal/glass) as possible to minimize gaps in physics coverage
  • Prefer a cooling solution from back and "inside" to minimize any structure outside the crystal/glass block outer radius
