EEEMCAL IN DETECTOR PROPOSALS

  • Draft text from ATHENA and ECCE proposals posted - CORE expected to come soon
  • Comment on Fig. pion rejection in ECCE proposal - expect PWO and SciGlass performance to be similar, at first glance this fact not clear since there is a lot of information presented in the figure, is there a way to simplify?
  • Authorship:
  • done by institution
  • many EEEMCAL institutions will be listed on all proposals - IB representative from each institution has to communicate the desired authors to the proto-collaborations (ATHENA: email to Ernst, ECCE: update GoogleSheet, CORE: email Charles/Pawel)

SIMULATIONS

  • ECCE: Orsay team produced performance plots
  • ATHENA: AANL team working on performance plots
  • Note that for the performance plots for the YR an ideal case was assumed
  • no materials
  • no gaps
  • Gaussian distributions

DESIGN

  • Design technical note posted and circulated to all proto-collaborations

PROTOTYPE BEAM TESTS

JLAB

  • Completed beam tests with PWO and SciGlass (2cm x 2cm x 20cm) and different readout schemes (PMT, SiPM)
  • Array: 3x3
  • SiPM configurations: 4 SiPM/crystal and 16 SiPM/crystal (Crytur-USA prototype)
  • Initial results shown for PWO and SciGlass
  • Note: the 3x3 calorimeter was not calibrated due to time constraints - would really need to calibrate channel-by-channel
  • Action: visualization of the tails - note that the current fit is central core - will be improved in more detailed analysis using crystal ball function (Link); note: in general as long as fits to data and simulation are performed in the same way should be ok to compare the results
  • Crytur-USA prototype
  • 3x3 array featuring 16SiPMs per crystal - combined readout, no noise observed in the lab
  • issues with temperature rising in the detector box
  • initially observed during cosmic tests via missing signals - but at that time unclear if missing signals were due to trigger, temperature, etc.
  • after beam tests temperature was measured with an external probe to be 100F near the sensors (and probably even higher inside the box); no signals were observed from beam test
  • possible reason for increased temperature: box was made light tight by closing it with a cover that may have restricted air flow
  • some data are available for analysis from cosmics test
  • additional optimizations planned: adjustable gain

DESY

  • Successfully set up 5x5 PWO+PMT and began debugging/gain matching etc.
  • Planning 3 different readout configurations (QCD, CAEN digitizer, JLab fADC250, SRO)
  • Plan to start taking data this weekend
  • Another period of data taking is planned for spring 2022
  • opportunity to test SciGlass in 5x5 setup then
  • Note: currently use 21mm wrapping in x and y

EEEMCAL IN EIC PROJECT - DISCUSSION OF LONG-LEAD PROCUREMENTS (Sasha)

  • Currently have PWO crystal configurations:
  • ATHENA: ~2000 blocks
  • ECCE: ~3000 blocks
  • Production capacity CRYTUR:
  • ~500 blocks/year assuming concurrent projects other than EIC
  • Maximum capacity is 720 blocks/year (60 crystals/month)
  • Normal procurement starts after CD3 approval and must be at most 3 years from contract award to when blocks are delivered. At 500/year it would require more than 3 year --> long-lead procurement
  • Long-lead procurement starts when CD2/CD3A is approved - planned for Spring 2023
  • procurement would then start in ~Sept 2023 and all blocks must be delivered within at most 4 years
  • Actions for start of long-lead procurement
  • Crystal: need module design 90% complete by Spring 2023
  • Need specifications: dimensions, optical characteristics (light yield, transmission, ...), radiation hardness
  • SiPMs: need configuration and specs design complete by Spring 2023 - note: SiPMs included in Long-Lead Procurement since whole detector needs on order 1 million and vendor would need more than 4 years to produce them
  • Need specifications: pixel size, how many per crystal, etc.
  • Note on Lead Glass
  • About 9000 blocks available from Phenix - would need readout, some refurbishment etc.
  • Note on SciGlass
  • for readout of large cross section 4x4 need some more detail on how it is envisioned, e.g., using light guides or more SiPMs per block

BRIEF REMINDER ABOUT FUNDING PATH

  • Have an R&D plan posted on the Wiki (Link) with distribution of tasks globally
  • Expect NSF MSRI funding proposal submissions in January 2023 - by that time refine the tasks and which group(s) take on which components for asking for funding, also including international agencies (Armenia, Czech Republic, France)

NEXT MEETING: 10 DECEMBER AT 8:30AM ET
