MODELING THERMAL STRESSES AND PROTOTYPE

  • Investigated different heater configurations - Thinner and longer heater tines, three heater tines to each absorber plot
  • Temperature profile and stress/deformation
  • Modeling heater attached vs. no heater to make sure that see real effect of beam and not of heater
  • observe very little impact, so confident what will be observed is beam effect
  • Prototype design/construction
  • copper material sourced - C101 (not radiation hard material, but not tested in this test, $23/pound)
  • plan to make two different configurations
  • two ways to make prototype (water jet cutting or laminated) - prefer water jet cutting, investigating cost and precision possible (would prefer 1mm tolerance or better)

  • Elmet block procurement initiated - cost effective for large quantity (trying for half of blocks needed)
  • Higher precision machined blocks
