Minutes

Present: Hovanes, Beni, Pavel, Mikhail, Igor, Edy, Sean

  • Mikhail reported that the detectors for KFM have been disassembled. They will be packed sometime in Spetember. The detectors will become UoY property, and since they need to have insurance while the equipment is at JLAB, they will need to do some paperwork with JLAB before shipping the detectors.

  • Pavel updated the magnetic shielding in the FLUKA model. He also did some studies regarding the CPS magnet trip scenario when only the permanent magnet bends the electron beam downward to prevent it into going into the 10" beam-pipe. He finds that CPS electron beam will clip the edge of the 10" beam pipe and that we may need to place a tungsten block just below the vacuum beam-pipe to intercept that beam. Pavel does not think we need thicker beam pipe downstream of CPS than GlueX has.
  • Pavel will need the drawings to find where the tungsten block would be most effective.
  • Tim will send Pavel the drawings of the downstream area of the tagger hall beam-pipe.

  • Tim reported that the KPT tungsten and Beryllium drawing are being finalized, they are in the release state. Their purchase request will likely be submitted next week and may use the current FY funding.
  • Design of the CPS shielding still in progress. CPS assembly sequence is being studied.
  • The bids for the CPS magnet are coming. The indications are that the cost could be below the estimate in the PR.
  • More painted lead bricks have been ordered for KPT shielding.
  • Hovanes commented that there was a meeting between Hall D engineers and the target group. The target group confirmed that a 40cm cryo-target for CPS with 6cm diameter is possible with the current design of the start counter. A new scattering chamber would have to be designed and built. The position of such a target would still have a few centimeters uncertainty, and the target group can place it based on what the experiment's priorities are in terms of the z-position of the target.
  • There was a brief discussion about the beam pipe size upstream of the cryo-target. The consensus was that it needs to be 6cm in inner diameter to match the target radius as it provides extra shielding against particles flying into GlueX detectors that are close to the beam-line.

  • Hovanes showed a couple of slides discussing the FSD needs of KLF. He had a list of signals that Hall D would like to have in addition to what accelerator already has for the machine safety.
  • There is already FSD hardware in the tagger hall, according to Hovanes. But Hovanes though that we may not have VME crates and boards for FSD n the main hall.
  • Tim pointed out that in case of vacuum deterioration gate valves close in the hall which should trigger a FSD. Therefore, there is a good chance that there is FSD electronics to handle signals in the main Hall D as well.
  • Beni commented that the sensors that we use to generate FSD need to be redundant if they are locate inside CPS or KPT enclosures.
  • Edy will try to set up a meeting with people in the accelerator division who manage the FSD system.

  • Beni asked if a decision has been made about having a photon beam running during KLF.
  • Hovanes was not aware of a decision, and he was not sure if a decision making mechanism even exists at this time. The discussions on the beam-line and software meetings suggests that the current CPS design can provide photon beam on GlueX suitable for the calibration purposes. This will require some moderate modifications of the beam-line design.

  • Next meeting will be in two weeks.
