Beam Line Commissioning Plan

UITF Operating Procedure

Wastewater commissioning plan (high level)

RCG monitoring

Gun Test Stand Mode:

  1. HV commissioning and processing of the gun
  2. Determination of Operating Voltage for a low FE or FE free regime: 180kV with a 20kV/min ramp up rate.

keV mode: (VBVM101 locked in)

  1. Insert Faraday cups 1 & 2.
  2. Verify manual valves VMVK203 and VMVK401 are open; open them if they are closed and vacuum is reasonable on both sides of the valve.
  3. Using the laser amplifier, configure it to create a low current CW beam of ~10nA
  4. Systematically insert all of the Viewers in the keV region. Verify they all insert, retract, and are focused and the the lights work. File PR if problem arises.
  5. Open and close each valve in the keV region and makes sure it hits its limit switch on both sides. Leave all valves opened when completed. File PR if problem arises.
  6. Verify all vacuum pumps in the keV region are on and at reasonable voltages/currents. File PR if problem arises.
  7. Turn on gun to operating voltage.
  8. Insert ITVK201
  9. We are going to test the newly installed target encoder interlock. Contact the Accelerator DSO (Harry Fanning [x7619 / fanning@jlab.org]) to observe the test:
    • Set the laser to emit 'Viewer Limited' beam
    • Adjust the target ladder to move to a new position
    • Did the laser trip to 'Beam Synch'?
      1. Yes - Great! Record the results of the test in the UITFLog
      2. No - Curses! Contact Gary Croke [x5097/gcroke@jlab.org] for help troubleshooting the interlock. You may proceed with the below keV testing which work occurs if it is opportunistic, but no beam is authorized through the Booster until this is corrected, tested, and the result has been recorded by the DSO.
  10. In parallel with the above test (or separately with another operator) the calibration of target positions on the rail may be executed by Scott Windham [x7324 / windham@jlab.org] / Weiwei Lu. [x7476 / weiwei@jlab.org]
  11. MBHK101H & V, MBHK102H & V, and MFHK101 were all disconnected this down

    • Verify the MBHK102H & V correctors kick in the appropriate dimension and with the appropriate sign. File PR if problem arises.
    • Use MFHK101 to determine the magnetic field which approximately focus beam on the viewer; use correctors as necessary to keep beam on the viewer.
    • Using the ditherer, dither the solenoid by 10% and use the K101 corrector pair to center beam in the solenoid (i.e. where there is no horizontal/vertical displacement as the field changes)
    • Use the K102 corrector pair to center beam on the viewer.
  12. Continue to set up keV beam to FC#1 per normal operating procedure.
  13. Execute UITFList #### with Scott Windham and Weiwei Lu to map the Chopper Slit Encoder (Encoder motor was changed over the down)
  14. Once mapped, withdraw the chopper slit (it will not be used for this experiment)
  15. Continue beam setup to FC#2 per procedure
  16. Establish beam to the keV spectrometer
    • Configure the laser to be able to generate Tune mode beam.

  2. Systematically insert all of the Viewers in the MeV region. Verify they all insert, retract, and are focused and the the lights work. File PR if problem arises.
  3. Open and close each valve in the MeV region and makes sure it hits its limit switch on both sides. Leave all valves opened when completed. File PR if problem arises.
  4. Execute UITFList #### with Jim Kortze to test the closure of VFVM401
  5. Verify manual valves VMVM301 and VMVM401 are open; open them if they are closed and vacuum is reasonable on both sides of the valve.

MeV mode to Wastewater Line:

General Note: After any fault or interruption in sending beam, return beam to FC4 and verify it's presence and position with either the viewer or BPM before pulling the cup to run to the thin foil/wastewater targets.

  3. Move the target ladder to the solid block / dump position.
  4. Configure the current clamp for I<15nA delivery
  5. Verify downstream valves are open.

    • Use these two corrector pairs to center beam on ITVM601.

First diagnostic cross

  1. Withdraw ITVM601 and insert IYGM603.
  2. Ensure the solenoid is at 0 BdL and on-loop / cycled
  3. Send 10nA CW beam there and center it on the viewer with the 601BH/V correctors.
  4. Verify the appropriate insertion direction of the camera (from above / +y) and make magnetic kicks (without using the 602A/B correctors) in the horizontal and vertical dimensions to ensure appropriate camera alignment. File a PR if the camera is mis-aligned.
  5. MBHM602AH & V and MBHM602BH & V are newly installed.
    • Verify on IYGM603 the MBHM602AH & V correctors kick in the appropriate dimension and with the appropriate sign. File PR if problem arises.
    • Verify on IYGM603 the MBHM602BH & V correctors kick in the appropriate dimension and with the appropriate sign. File PR if problem arises.
  6. If beam is very diffuse on IYGM603 use to solenoid to focus it as necessary.

Second diagnostic cross

  1. Withdraw IYGM603 and insert IYGM604
  2. Verify the appropriate insertion direction of the camera (from above / +y) and make magnetic kicks (without using the 603 correctors) in the horizontal and vertical dimensions to ensure appropriate camera alignment. File a PR if the camera is mis-aligned.

  7. Connect to the ITVM604A camera. Can you clearly see the target mechanism and view screen? If not, file a problem report.
  8. Adjust the target to each of its 5 positions. Do the stops correspond with sensible positions as seen on the camera (i.e. the target is in line with the exit window). If not, file a PR.
  9. An interlock has been put in to drop the laser mode to Beam synch with the target cells in motion. It is desirable we test the functionality of the interlock. Start a running logbook entry for this exercise. Establish beam to FC#4 and adjust the target ladder from the dump position (position 1) to target position 2. Did beam stop, note yes or no. Repeat the exercise from 2 >3, 3 >4, 4 > 5, 5>1, and 1>5. File a PR if beam was not stopped in any instance.

If there are any open PRs at this point, stop and correct the issues with EES and the Facility manager before beginning the experimental program studies.

  1. BLM Testing
