Issue Statement

  • When T2 at ESR trips off, the turbine continues to spin much longer than expected. There is a concern that the turbine will be damaged if it does not stop spinning when the inlet valve is closed. On a few occasions, the turbine continued to spin (~500Hz) until the the plant was re-started.

Agenda and Notes

1. What do we need to do to fix this problem.

-Several things can be done to correct the issue. The least impact (from an operational view) would be to isolate and warm up the turbine temporarily.

2. Is this really a problem (I think that this is a big problem)

-Absolutely. The bearing gas system isn't yet fully understood. Regardless, a turbine spinning when bearing gas is not active would certainly wear the turbine.

3. Why do we think this is a problem (Is bearing gas on during that time)

  -See above.

4. Should we be doing something manually?

-For long outages, consider closing the manual valve on the T2 outlet.

5. Other questions that we need to make sure we have answered. 6. T2 was stopped and warmed from 1/25 - 1/26. It does not appear that this warming alleviated the condition at all.

-DPs between the HP line and the turbine inlet are similar to the pre-warm up values.
-Based on pressure and temperature data, it is clear that the inlet valve leaks by at a substantial rate.

Action Items

  1. investigate bearing gas process at ESR// T2 uses bearing gas upon start up. T1 uses no bearing gas.
  2. Verify LVDT on turbine inlet valve// This can only be done with CBX de-pressurized?
  3. Warm T2. Schedule. Dependent on transfer line. // Transfer line is available, warm up by 1/25/17, expect 24 hours
  4. Check seating force of T2 inlet valve (require trip?) to verify proper operation, can only be done with CBX de-pressurized
  5. Can T2 be isolated to support troubleshooting without damaging turbine or stopping entire CBX?// Communicate with controls to stage a trouble shooting system that can be initiated CBX trip
  6. Develop plan to isolate CBX in the event T2 must be stopped, and/or CBX must be tripped.
  7. Verify that we have a spare.//we have a spare for each ESR turbine
  8. What is required to check seating force (operationally)?
  9. Create an alarm that will alert us when turbine inlet valves are closed and turbine speed is > 0.
  10. drink a beer/ complete. will perform again 1/23
  11. Get the transfer line from CHL operational// Done
  12. follow-up meeting ~1/20/2017. // 1/23
  13. Contact Pete to begin information/data collection, vendors, contacts.// m-drive location has been found
  14. Is there an IA isolation valve that can be used so the IA solenoid valve can be replaced?
  15. Do we have a replacement solenoid valve for the IA to the inlet valve solenoid?

TEXT

Action Items 1/23/17

  1. Check seating force of T2 inlet valve (require trip?) Can only be done when CBX is depressurized.
  2. Can T2 be isolated to support troubleshooting without damaging turbine or stopping entire CBX? //see above.
  3. Develop plan to isolate CBX in the event T2 must be stopped, and/or CBX must be tripped.
  4. Create an alarm that will alert us when turbine inlet valves are closed and turbine speed is > 0.
  5. drink a beer/ /
  6. follow-up meeting ~1/20/2017. // 1/27
  7. Is there an IA isolation valve that can be used so the IA solenoid valve can be replaced?//verify spring-close. if this is the case, the IA solenoid valve can be replaced while T2 is warming.
  8. Do we have a replacement solenoid valve for the IA to the inlet valve solenoid?

Action Items 1/27/17

  1. Create an alarm that will alert us when turbine inlet valves are closed and turbine speed is > 0.
  2. drink a beer/ /
  3. follow-up meeting 2/1/2017. //
  4. Order a replacement IA solenoid.
  5. Develop operational procedure to isolate cold box upon next trip and perform the following actions:
-Check the seating force of the T2 inlet valve
    -Check the LVDT calibration
-Replace the IA solenoid in the cabinet.
-Identify what, if anything requires correction
  1. isolate IA to T2 inlet valve and verify that valve is "bottomed". Stop T2 for this work. Transferline must be online.
