SCIGLASS VS PBGLASS

  • Using PbGl from Phenix - what would happen if use longer modules?
  • At best would not make things better
  • longer modules, longer interaction length for hadrons - higher prob to interact and to look similar to electron, so no better e/pi
  • longer modules better for high energy, but not better for lower energy - lead glass will have light attenuation
  • Beam test: lead glass with definite length and found 40cm
  • light attentuation also present in SciGlass
  • Lead glass only Cherenkov, SciGlass scintillator and has more photons and attenuation not as much of an impact
  • Best type of PbGl for EIC - PbGl can handle about 10kRad - TF1 type best to use (those are the ones that are available from JLab with similar dimensions of SciGlass)
  • PbGl straightforward to cut

MECHANICAL DESIGN MODEL

  • Need definition of geometry
  • Try to get to higher eta coverage with insert
  • Action: find out about insert in global context

READOUT

  • Array of SiPMs - options availabe from vendor and iterate
  • Readout array design for collecting light from large surface - how many SiPMs, light guides
  • Prototype tests: Crytur-USA, JLAB
  • Testbench: linearity, pixel recovery time, jitters, (methods established by GlueX)
  • Need to present concrete plans by spring 2023
  • How to read out from 4x4cm^2 - tests are needed for that
  • Project: find out what Hamamatsu SiPM cost, Hamamatsu can produce 4x4 matrix (Fernando)
  • Orsay: possibility for reading SiPM with ASIC (existing)
  • What dont't have yet: photon density (photons from crystal per MeV) for SiPM - for this need calibration spectrum for SiPM (two steps: measure crystal with beam, then calibrate - same tower with LED and increase gain etc.)
  • alternative: test with scintillator with radioactive source
  • Electron side in EIC need to measure to very low energies - need to understand/reduce noise
  • Prototype tests could be done at AANL 1-10 MeV - need to schedule several months in advance

SIMULATIONS AND SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT

  • UK planning to develop software
  • Need information on software framework
  • AI WG - optimization of EEEMCAL with AI assistance
  • Clustering and shower profile evaluation - discrimination of single photons and merged pi0 photons up to highest momentum
  • merged photons from pi0 decay
  • large modules becomes even more important

PROTOTYPES

  • SciGlass should be at MIT by end of March for DESY beam tests
  • nine would be ideal
  • Low energy tests at AANL - need prototype

SUMMARY SLIDES FROM JLAB PROTOTYPE TESTS

  • Crystal
  • SiPM
  • SciGlass
