PARTICIPANTS: Josh, Sasha, Carlos, Crytur, Hrachya, Ioana, Joerg, Justin, Renee, Rosi, Richard, Pete, Vardan, Tanja

DESIGN/ENGINEERING

  • Discussions about supporting EEEMCAL from central barrel are ongoing
  • imaging calorimeter barrel supports all inner detectors (including DIRC bars, EEEMCAL, tracking cylinder, etc.)
  • Cooling design studies also ongoing

PHOTOSENSORS

  • Irradiation studies ongoing
  • 14161-6015 SiPMs are being tested in BNL, UCR, and Gerard - hadron irradiation up to 10^11 and down to 10^9 - planned for October 2023 (initially planned for July 2023)
  • Action item: keep an eye on irradiation tests - if there should be further delays might plan our own irradiation studies

ELECTRONICS/READOUT

  • Overall: Investigate stability, linearity, power deposition
  • Discrete electronics: there are at least three approaches (JLab/FEG, INFN, Crytur).
  • JLab/FEG: SiPM loaded by ~10ohm resistor followed by a voltage amplifier; basic plan for production SiPM board exists
  • INFN: uses a preamp, which may not be ideal with respect to linearity; similar design used for STAR FMS preshower and EPD detectors - for STAR FCS when needed to consider linearity it was found that it was best to avoid that approach, at least in a design with discrete transistors - difficult to maintain impedance loading the SiPM out ot high enough frequencies, which impacrs linearity (higher voltage signal on the SiPM in the pulse means that later fired pixels contribute less charge than they ought to)
  • Crytur-USA: completed low energy prototype tests and evaluating results
  • Action item: organize a meeting with interested parties on advancing the FEB (& SiPM board) design - set up a zoom meeting in the next week or so
  • ASICS: PCB received; working on soldering the SiPMs onto the boards; planning start measurements with LED etc. in the next few weeks
  • Note: Lowest energy expected to be detected at EIC: lowest 100 MeV for shower (per tower 5 MeV)
  • Number of SiPMs on boards to fit the crystal cross sectional area:
  • Maximum dimensions of the SiPM package is 6.95 x 7.45 requiring the pitch between crystals to be at least 22.35, a bit more really, if one wants to try to use 9 SiPM.
  • Two avenues: 1) nominal: use 4 SiPM and keep crystal dimension, 2) increase crystal cross sectional area and use 9 SiPMs - this would require additional studies, also any impact on fitting the crystals into the overall envelope

NSAC LONG RANGE PLAN AND EEEMCAL

  • LRP approved at the 4 October NSAC Meeting and is now published
  • EIC is recommendation 3, which is considered equally important as recommendation 2
  • Disussion about the ordering of the recommendations and the discussion of Detector 2 in the LRP
  • Overall it is important to now use the document and lobby/advertise to bring additional funding into the field - there are several ongoing activities for our community and EEEMCAL to participate in, e.g., speaking with representatives etc.
  • November 8 Trip to Capitol Hill to advertise the LRP

EIC PROJECT REVIEWS

  • Next week there is the Director's Review for the CD2/CD3A - this is an important review for the EIC overall and so also for EEEMCAL - Sasha is presenting the calorimeters

NEXT MEETING: FRIDAY 20 OCTOBER AT 8:00 AM ET
