MECHANICAL DESIGN RECAP

  • Last time discussed the main mounting of the EEEMCAL to the overall detector structure - this is envisioned to be done with a carbon tube that contains all inner detectors
  • Discussions from last time:
  • Is the carbon tube included in the simulation - Dmitry checked and a 1cm carbon fiber tube is included
  • The outer radius of the EEEMCAL is assumed to be 65cm (distance from center of the dodecagon to the electron beam including the frame). Note that the detector is not a perfect circle/cylinder. The crystal edges themselves are at ~63.5 - 64cm. Should remain in contact about this dimension.
  • Remaining space radially at z-location of the EEEMCAL could be used for cables

TDR Writing

  • Clone the overleaf structure provided by EPIC into and overleaf one that all of EEEMCAL can write to
  • Start from NSF MSRI proposal and populate the sections
  • level of the TDR is preliminary design, so proposal is well suited

PREPARATIONS FOR BEAM TEST

  • Send personnel information to Douglas
  • DESY wants the names at least a week before, but better to do it even earlier
  • for letter of invitation also need names
  • There will be three 5x5 crystal array prototypes
  • MIT: nominally PMT readout
  • plan is to instrument a few channels with Hamamatsu 3x3mm/15um SiPM readout for direct comparison
  • IJCLab-Orsay: nominally 3x3mm/15um Hamamatsu SiPM + ASIC readout chain
  • plan is to make the readout chain modular for direct comparison of ASIC and discrete readout chains
  • Crytur/Crytur USA: nominally Broadcom SiPM + in-house readout chain
  • might use for direct test of different SiPM models
  • Action: get information on the prototype details
  • Status and plans of the IJCLab-Orsay prototype
  • Hamamatsu SiPM (3015) order has been placed and expect to arrive in the second half of August
  • Working on PCB assembly
  • testing in-house procedures for assembly for beam test
  • received a quote from a vendor that could be used as an alternative
  • Arrangements of SiPMS on the boards
  • encountered issue in x and y - might be able to address with component adhesives
  • no issue in z, so they are coplanar and don't expect optical coupling issues; optical coupling planned with optical grease
  • ASIC cables - test with real experiment length as possible
  • get 50-60cm length cable for real experiment length
  • also short length cables (5cm) if longer ones don't work
  • Action: Design mezzanine board for compatibility of SiPM boards with the ASIC/discrete readout chains
  • should allow for all connectors etc.
  • have a meeting to discus the details (next week or after 15 August) - Justing will make poll
  • Status and plans for the MIT prototype instrumentation with SiPM
  • for discrete/ASIC test instrument a few channels with SiPM
  • have 40 SiPMs available - could send to Carlos for assembly (wait on decision on if that is done in-house or at the vendor)
  • Action: need readout chain for SiPM
  • Action: for discrete readout need to identify fADCs
  • Justin has been talking with C. Cuevas to borrow a JLab fADC250 and associated readout
  • Compared to the envisioned 50 Msamples/sec for EIC the JLab fADC250 is five times faster. For the beam test the f250 could likely be directly used, e.g., signal from preamp to fADC, but to simulate the EIC conditions additional work would be needed

PROJECT PDE

  • Purpose is towards final design
  • Documentation preparation ongoing

NEXT MEETING: FRIDAY 9 AUGUST AT 8AM ET
