UPDATE SHIELDING SIMULATION
- Goal: determine if reduced shielding configuration sufficient
- Full geometry implemented in FLUKA - uses radiation length of material as guidance instead of individual blocks as that needs too much computing resources
- 1.5 m^3 (~20 tons of lead)
- Results suggests that sides are performing well
- Front needs further investigation to determine if need more shielding material there
- need to check radiation limits around target
- Action item: write-up of the simulation studies for further evaluation if all works
- Text from CPS 2018 Technical Review
- Radiation studies have been carried out assuming 1000 hours of operation with
the following radiation requirements:
- Prompt dose rate in hall = several rem/hr at 30 feet from device.
- Prompt dose rate at the site boundary = 1 µrem/hr.
- Activation dose outside the device envelope at one foot distance =
several mrem/hr one hour after the end of a1000 hour run.
- Activation dose at the pivot in the experimental target area at one foot
distance from the scattering chamber = several mrem/hr one hour after the end of a 1000 hour run.
ENGINEERING/DESIGN
- Implemented FLUKA as input into a Fluent-like program to calculate power depositions, cooling, etc.
- Next, will import the data into Fluent
HALLD
- Radiation dose calculations ongoing
- Question about if Hall C or Hall D CPS will be the first to start operation
