ENGINEERING UPDATE Slides
- CPS prototype - machining complete of testing hardware; testing anticipated to begin in late fall
- TOSCA Modeling
- CPS Coils and Steel Procurement
- CPS magnet and assembly layout
- 3D thermal and fluent model
- initial studies with assumptions on velocity of fluid (1.8m/s), applied field flux (16666666 W/ms) and shape, inlet temperature (298.15K), walls of pole and absorber with convection (5 W/m2K)
- good progress with this testing and verification stage - no profile (optics) yet in
- Fringe fields (magnetic field 1-2 m from center of magnet)
- it's a few hundred Gauss
- Alignment magnet to collimator (3mm) - how is optimization of positioning of CPS done
- support stands etc. (accuracy of 1/2 mm)
- 1/2mm should be doable - very big magnets can be done to 1mm
DESIGN OPTIMIZATION
- Update from simulations on investigation of CPS with less tungsten and/or lead
- Discussion about cutting blocks for exit channel, holes for mounting etc.
- tungsten is cast material - machining more difficult than, e.g., copper, but has been done
NEXT MEETING: FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 16TH AT 8:00AM ET
