Agenda

No agenda prepared before meeting

Minutes

Attendees: Lisa S., Torri J, Rhonda B., Thomas B., David L.

  • There was no agenda posted prior to the meeting so we reviewed what the known action items are.
  • Event announcement
    • We looked briefly at the event announcement/permission slip and discussed what else was needed to get it completed and distributed
    • Lisa suggested we put it on official letterhead. Rhonda said she would do that using the ScienceEd logo
    • Food requirements need to be added
      • Rhonda said it will be easiest of the school provides a bag lunch. Students will need to get theirs before leaving the school
      • We briefly discussed pizza as a backup. It was noted that Momo's has right of first refusal for JLab events
    • Times need to be added to the form as well including that school transportation will be provided.
      • Rhonda noted that not all middle schools have same start time/end time. She them up and confirmed that there is at least one middle school on each of the A,B,C schedules
      • Expect actual time with students to be 10:00am-1:15pm
  • Event agenda
    • We reviewed the event agenda and timeline. Since the start time and end times need to be adjusted, the schedule will need to be cut down. Thomas suggested we drop the section on MNIST.
    • Some suggestions and comments from Lisa and Rhonda on program:
      • Tying their own experience is good. e.g. if we can show them learning over time and relate it to the AI learning over time as it trains
      • Give some numbers to give them a sense of scale for training ChatGPT vs our training of Flappy Bird
      • We should look up some good 7th grade ML definitions
      • Outliers are discussed in 7th grade so we should mention those
      • Most students may struggle with sum notation, but will easily grasp a simple example for averaging

Action Items

  1. Put permission slip on letterhead, add times, transportation info., and food requirements and circulate to group. (Rhonda)
  2. Invite Gabriel to meeting soon to go over technical details (Lisa)
  3. Initiate school logistics discuss with Candy Byron@NNPS (Lisa+Rhonda)
  4. Update event schedule with new 10:00am-1:15pm constraints
