Meeting to discuss the Middle School Data Science Workshop.

Minutes

Attendees: Thomas B., Torri. J, Lisa S-L., David L.

  • We went over the statement in the AIOP project and what our initial thoughts on the event were. We then started touching on a number of topics.
  • Computers
    • Students have school issued Chromebooks that could be suitable.
    • Lisa will ask her contact at NNPS about model and whether we could get one for testing
  • Network
    • Venue will need Access Points sufficient for all students to connect
  • Location
    • JLab would be desirable as a "special location"
    • Being at the school may add a level of inclusivity if transportation is not provided
    • An alternative location might be Brooks Crossing if needed
  • Target group
    • There are around 12 middle schools total in NNPS with 8-9 of them standard and others special needs
    • Select ~3 students per school (~30 total?)
    • Will need a volunteer in room for every 2-3 groups. Expect 2-3 kids per group. (4-5 volunteers)
    • Can make a request for 2 adults (may be treated as professional development)
      • Possible to leverage IT personnel (there is one per school)
  • When
    • One day event during normal work week
    • 9am-2pm actual time
    • Fall is better since many activities and testing occurs in Spring
  • Selection process
    • Let schools choose, but we should provide selection criteria
  • We agreed to meet every 2 weeks
