One should first become familiar with the SHMS and HMS calorimeters, and calorimetry in general. The development of the SHMS and HMS calorimeters are outlined on the Doc DB, in the linked references:

The main aim of this section is to discuss the calorimeter calibration in software. Difficulty in calibrating the calorimeter for X>1 running illuminated some short-comings of the calibration script, which are also outlined here.
