SUMMARY NOTES

SIMULATIONS (Gabriel)

  • Power deposition in central CPS
  • total power 30kW
  • fraction of power ~1kW/cm
  • Core flared - but small at entrance and then flares out due to energy spread, deflection
  • gap largest at downstream end
  • ACTION: update model to match simulation


MECHANICAL MODELING/DESIGN (Josh, Steve L.)

  • Beam pipe channel design: need specs for diameter, flare (Bogan can provide) - assumed in model rectangular shape
  • part the flares out in Gabriel model consists of two cones (bigger one is ~12cm)
  • easiest may be circular and diameter ~4" - best only one flange
  • Downstream beam pipe 4" diameter seems to work well
  • ACTION: Offline discussion about beam pipe material, cooling, dimensions
  • Note: no cooling needed for pipe
  • Magnet cooling - how to introduce cooling into the shield
  • labyrinth not needed as particles of low energy and bending down, opening 1cm and length 30cm then ratio 30
  • best to make connections upstream - through back with lower entry, bigger hole in back should not be a problem
  • cooling for 30kW beam, but also need cooling and power for magnet itself
  • main worry is activation - best might be straight from back (upstream!) for power
  • ACTION: implement cooling channels
  • Cu Core machining
  • Compound corners - best may be a few mm
  • ACTION: edit core model, pole for beam pipe at rear exit (diameter cabling, beam pipe, etc.)


TUNGSTEN POWDER (Bogdan)

  • Not yet ordered - still in procurement
  • ACTION: investigate order status
  • Involve B. Metzger in discussion about tungsten powder - prior experience with W mixtures
  • investigate possibility to order lower density powder and R&D to make suitable blocks
  • high density powder became expensive


LEAD PROCUREMENT (Bogdan)

  • In the works - should arrive in ~ 2months
  • May be too much to store in Pb storage area - investigation ongoing
