D&I Message from 2/18/2021 (Click "Expand" to the right for details -->):
A message from Gina Lawson on Jefferson Lab's D&I Program Lead:
As some of you may know from the Weekly Briefs, Jefferson Lab's D&I Program Lead and members of Leadership are facilitating demographic focus group meetings that focus on groups at the lab that scored the lab lower during the 2020 D&I Survey. The goal of these meetings is to gain additional feedback from staff members belonging to these focus groups so that Leadership is aware of the issues, and solutions can be generated to alleviate these problems when able.
I was hoping since you all work closely with your groups/divisions, you would be able to help me in getting the word out to staff within your group, so those who will want to participate are aware of these meetings and are able to attend.
Also, there is a meeting scheduled specifically for Administrative Assistants to be held on March 2nd.
Here is the information for each of the remaining scheduled meetings:
Feb. 18: Veteran Status - Will Oren
Feb. 19: Role (Technicians) - Andrei Seryi
Feb. 23: Age/Generation - Amber Boehnlein
Feb. 25: Race - Lauren Hansen
Feb. 26: Gender - Jennifer Logan
Mar. 2: Role (Admin Assistant) - Stephen Smith
Mar. 10: Role (Staff Admin) - Stephen Smith
Mar. 16: Disability - Rusty Sprouse
Meeting links are included in the calendar event links for each event listed above.
Please let me know if you have any questions or have any concerns.
Thank you!
Gina

Minutes:
Attendees: David L., Carl T., Nathan B., Kishan R., Vardan G., Thomas B.
- Announcements
- Kishan is here!!
- It was noted that the new Jupyterhub instance contains some preliminary GPU support. Wes mentioned something about installing "tensorflow" instead of "tensorflow-gpu". Kishan noted that with the latest versions they have merged so now there is only "tensorflow".
- SRO
- Productive meeting with TriDAS group last week
- Task assignments made for TriDAS development
- Lengthy discussion about recent results of ERSAP testing by Vardan
- Spikes in missing framew from ERSAP test:
- VTP firmware is now being developed by Ben and Dave to include more monitoring tools
- Chis L. event source now sending data read from files so payloads have properly formatted buffers
- Carl is continuing to port and test the ERSAP Java code into C++
- Productive meeting with TriDAS group last week
- CODA
- Carl working on some issues with cMsg brought up by Dave A.
- AFECS 4.1 release created
- Extended COOL acomponent
- Numerous enhancements to help resolve pending feature requests
- Dave A. will check out and is responsible for formalizing the release with new CODA version
- AI
- Hydra vCHEP paper well underway
- Cryptic teaser message from Amber on upcoming FOA
- Expect decision on new hires for AI controls project at Thursday meeting this week
- Kishan and David met with Zisis and Cristiano last week to discuss GlueX BCAL shower classification problem.
- They were going to send follow-up info, but we haven't seen it yet.
- Offsite Computing
- GlueX PSC allocation is now exhausted. Awaiting results of new allocation proposal. If approved, we will not get access until April
- Some core dumps seen on rare occasions on GlueX NERSC jobs. No clues yet as to why.
- OSG
- Thomas is currently in the process of helping Edgar's replacement get accounts set up at JLab
- osg16 node was causing some issues on Friday due to being overloaded with jobs. Will look into getting osg20 reconfigured to relieve some of the load.
- Thomas reported that a GlueX collaborator (Peter Pauli) is now the first point of contact for MCWrapper issues in GlueX. He has been given some admin rights to repository/DB
- SPACK
- David and Carl will meet this week to discuss moving forward with this
- Nathan now able to mount spack repository via cvmfs on his mac and then access it via Docker container. This provides an effectively local Linux platform for testing the cvmfs distributed spack binaries
- ACTS
- Nathan looked into using the ROOT7 event viewer which was claimed to work with the hits used by ACTS.
- Several issues encountered. ROOT7 online viewer system seems buggy and not really ready for production use.
- Nathan working with a user (Carlos and Pukai sp?) on getting ACTS working in eJANA
- Customer is trying to compile ACTS directly rather than use package manager like ejpm or spack
- Some discussion over striking the balance over providing large amounts of manpower to EIC to help achieve our common goal of having EIC adopt a JANA-based software stack vs. focussing manpower on other EPSCI projects.
- Nathan will continue strong support, but will cap it so that it does not occupy 100% of his time.
- Nathan looked into using the ROOT7 event viewer which was claimed to work with the hits used by ACTS.
- CLARA
- rare stall issue for CLAS12 production jobs still not fully understood. It looks to be related to memory requests.
- Need engine-specific monitoring to help diagnose issue
- CLARA 4.3.13 released.
- A few code changes, but CLAS12 reports 20% performance improvement. Vardan attributes this almost entirely to building it with JDK11 which has better garbage collection.
- rare stall issue for CLAS12 production jobs still not fully understood. It looks to be related to memory requests.
- JANA2
- Docker + CVMFS mount will help with developing and testing against existing packages in the GlueX software stack.
- Getting ready to work on getting scons build system to work with JANA2 GlueX port (development has been done under cmake).
