    6. Accelerator: down until next Friday and will be back with 6GeV energy

March 27

  • Participants : Ashot, Chao, Dipangkar, Eugene, Krishna, Li,Mark, Mehdi
  • Minutes:
    1. Chao presented his booster results. The noise level on the pedestal with the new boosters is similar to the one observed before with the old booster. As for the simulation, more work is needed on the pile-up but it looks like that even a 10 μm diamond target is still too thick for our DAQ.
    2. Vacuum box:
      • Last Monday, they had a problem in the transportation from the painter to Meyer. The redid the painting with a Meyer person on site to help for the packing. It should have been shipped on Tuesday.
    3. Beamline
      • Bob sent some sketches but we need more for Rolf. Eugene will put everything together and will provide a list of things to be done on the beamline to Rolf.
    4. GEM: they are under assembly, they will probably be done by mid-end of April. Dipangkar and Krishna will go to UVA to test the electronics and their DAQ.

    1. Accelerator:
      • It is not performing well, the hall is still open. They have a LCW problem and beam losses in the machine. Once this is fixed they will focus on hallA.
    2. Vacuum box
      • the tank was picked up from the vendor, they will inspect it today and packed it to ship it next week.
      • the analysis of the vacuum box has been forwarded to Rolf. As for the window, Bob does not have time to work on it before the summer.
    3. Booster
      • Booster were installed and tested with cosmics and LMS. It appears to have more noise on the crystal part than on the lead glass part. Chao will check the pedestal with HV and booster on to compare with previous pedestal data taken with old booster.

      • We will need to submit the remaining tasks list to Rolf
      • There is no promise but we have a chance to run in Spring 2016, but given the funding situation the accelerator will run for an estimated 10 weeks period. The schedule will be released by March 1st.
      • We may need to provide results for a test of destruction of the window. Dave Meekins will do the calculations and we need to provide the procedure of the hydro-forming. If we really need to test for destruction we may need to buy more material in order to have all the windows from the same batch or as suggested by Chris just measure the Young's modulus of the two samples and compare them.
      • Readiness review: will probably have two reviews. One for showing that we have all the pieces built and tested (GEM, beamline and target) and another one for safety with all the required documentation.

  • Participants : Ashot, Chao, Chris, Dipangkar, Eugene, Krishna, Li, Mahbub, Mark, Mehdi,Nilanga, Zhihong
  • Minutes:
    1. Beam Scehdule
      • PRad will not run in 2015, the situation is uncertain for 2016. (see schedule sent by Mont)
      • Spokespersons will have a meeting on Feb. 24th to discuss about the situation. On our side, we will need to prepare a list of the things we would want from the lab, of the statuses of the different items and the timeline for completion.
    2. Readiness review
      • The stopper is the beamline. Eugene met with Bob and FX. The estimated engineering time is about 4-6 weeks and an additional 4 weeks for the cart procurement. JLab does not have time so far to spend on this subject. CLAS12 and the 12 GeV upgrade has the absolute priority.
    3. Target
      • Chris will provide a list of the remaining task for the target. It is essentially in very good shape. The biggest issue is the 3D positionner. They need to design a better clamp.
      • the tritium experiemnt has been delayed by one year so Chris has more time to spend on our target.
      • There are enough power and outlets in the Hall to run the pumps and chiller. We just need to make new cables
    4. GEM
      • The overall delay is about one month due to delays on the frames, electronics at the customs and bad readout boards.
      • We should have a chamber built and tested by April.
      • Nilanga will provide pictures of the progress for the Feb. 24th meeting

    1. Target
      • The 3400 MC pump will be shipped today to Pfeiffer in New Hampshire for evaluation to see if it can be repaired in NH or needs to be shipped to Germany.
      • Mehdi took the pictures of the pump to chamber and chamber to stand connections and sent them to Pfeiffer to get new additional screens (at no charge).
    2. Box/Window
      • Delivery estimation is end of February or earlier.
      • Weekly updates have been requested and there is no show stopper for the rest of the project.
      • Window has been delivered on Monday to Meyer Tools.
    3. Beamline
      • no update from Bob as he was busy. The design and analysis of the beamline is estimated to take 4 weeks of engineering work.
      • The latest and final step file of the vacuum box has be receive, the ETA for the stand is about 3 weeks.
    4. GEM
    5. Frame has been shipped and the new readout board are being made. In two weeks Nilanga and Kondo will know is the board will be on time.
    6. Timeline: 2weeks for assembly and 1 week for testing. So we should be able to get one chamber ready by early March.
    7. Another option is to make a chamber with the readout boards with flaws and test it for the review. Then reopen it to change the boards. We should consider the option as a last resort since it will be time consuming for Kondo and Nilanga.
    8. Software
      • Chao and Li are working on theGain equalizer, Calibration and Online monitoring codes
    9. Checklist
      • Dipangkar will buy a labview license for the temperature controllers and Ashot the DAQ computer.

January 23

  • Participants : Ashot, Chao, Chris, Dipangkar, Eugene, Josh, Krishna, Li, Mahbub, Mehdi, Nilanga, Zhihong
  • Minutes:
    1. Target
      • Assembly of the gas handling system, cold head, vacuum system (3400 pumps and cell). No automated motion yet.
      • One of the 3400 had a problem. Chris will ship it back next week to Pfeiffer
      • Josh perform a test with only on 3400 running on the target chamber with He at 23K, no secondary chamber connected. He reached the density in the proposal. It exists a factor of 60 between the pressure in the center of the cell and pressure in the chamber with only one pump. So having the second one running will improve the situation.
      • The main message is that it is possible to run with only one pump and certainly with two.
    2. GEM:
      • Nilanga expects the shipment of the frame today and get it by next week.
      • The read out board had so problem and he will get new ones by mid-February
      • The plan is to start building the GEM on February 1st and get it assembled by end of February, tested in early March if there is no further delay.
      • Will receive the electronic by next week (time to get them clear at the customs)
      • Once we know more about the timing of all the GEM pieces we will be able to talk to Patricia about the date of the review.
    3. Accelerator and Hall B:
      • 12 GeV project has absolute priority
      • Hall B will have a staff meeting this afternoon to discuss about reorganization of manpower and milestone to reach. Bob became chief engineer and Dave is fully involved in the CLAS magnet. They might decide to work on shift for the installation of the torus which means no beam at all in the hall (HPS and PRad will get no beam)
    4. Beamline
      • We will provide a sketch of the beamline and Bob will tell us how much engineering time it requires to complete the design and installation/construction so that we can give this info at the review.
      • From Li's simulation (see slides below), the current design of the window-pipe connection does not cause any background problem.
    5. Vacuum Box
      • The window is being shippe dto Meyer. Meyer recieved the new sheet for the box and will start to machine and weld it for the new box. We need to wait next week for a delivery estimate
    6. MRI
      • We need to make a list of all the different items (DAQ, Labview?, Pump??, power supply?) that remain to be bought in order to spend the remaining MRI funds.

January 16

  • Participants : Ashot, Chao, Chris, Dipangkar, Eugene, Josh, Krishna, Li, Mehdi, Nilanga, Zhihong
  • Minutes:
    1. Readiness Review:
      • Patricia: have the review early March because of the CLAS collaboration late February in Europe.
      • GEM: Need to have a chamber built and tested prior the review. There are few delays from CERN, Nilanga is waiting for next week to give an estimation of the completion of one chamber. Kondo is at CERN and will bring back electronic for the GEM
      • Target: Need to provide all the documentation at the review. Dave Meekins acts as the design authority and will ask another lab to review the design of the target. This should be done by early March.
      • Beamline: Will need a layout and design of it. Bob made a conceptual design of the window-pipe connection (see below). We will to provide background simulation with this new attachment piece. Li will take care of it.
    2. Window: Eugene is working on the shipping of the window for the pressure and vacuum test at Meyer's lab. Meyer had problems with the box. They need to redo it, this implies 1-2 weeks delay in the delivery.
    3. HyCal:
      • Need to work of EPICS script for a remote control of HyCal. Need to plan for an emergency stop in the counting room.
      • Need to order new booster supply with EPICS drivers (CAEN or WEINER). Dipangkar will take care of it.
    4. Accelerator schedule (so far)
      • Will run in early November. Accelerator has to show 12 GeV which means only 2.2 GeV is possible.
      • Only hall A and D are scheduled for physics if the accelerator provides 12 GeV beam.

      • Target:
        1. Has been push down to the lowest priority on the target group list behind the Hall A and D cryo-targets and the Hall A tritium target. We should not expect much work done from the target group prior the review. As for now, the chambers are connected and on the target stands, all the pumps are on and running. We will be able to show a version, which will not be the final one, at the review with pumps and cold head on flowing with Helium.
        2. The major item left is the safety documents. Dave Meekins will need to review on perform calculations but he is very busy right now.
      • Vacuum box:
        1. Try to form the window yesterday but they had problem with the tooling that bended but this should be fix in the next day or two.
        2. The plan is to send it for a test to Meyer Tool in Illinois: they will do a pressure test with a blank and a vacuum test with the window. Everything should be done (shipping, test and shipping back to JLab) by the end a January.
        3. We received all the calculation performed by Meyer and George already reviewed them.
      • Beamline Design:
        1. Conceptual for the vacuum box stand is ready

    1. Based on Li's simulation, the flange will introduce about 2% background to the first angular bin (0.8 - 1.05 degree). This background rate is low, thus it may be rejected by tracking. It will be verified by further simulation study. (The dimensions of the flange in the code may be changed according to the real design.)
    2. Zhihong obtained the fiber samples, he is waiting for the tools for cutting and polishing.
    3. Target chamber: lack of blank flanges and bellows in the delivery. The order and shipment information needs to be checked.
    4. GEM: the order can be placed quickly. Nilanga will attend the collaboration meeting.
    5. Move of HyCal: The work will start in June. Students need to make sure the trainings are up-to-date.

May 2

  • Participants: Alexander, Ashot, Chao, Dipangkar, Eugene, Francois-Xavier, Haiyan, Josh, Li, Mahbub, Mehdi, Sergei, Zhihong
  • Minutes:
    1. Chao will implement the 1mm iron HyCal window into his simulation
    2. Sergei:
      • Start moving HyCal May 28th (on transporter or cart? Cart would be a good idea so that we can start testing it but this could interfere with work in the hall), July 9th testing
      • electronics: The old fastbus have long cables and 34 pin connectors. For Flash ADC, we will need to replace the connector by LEMO connectors (total of ~$30k), the lead time is few month so we need to order them asap. The ADC are right now used by HPS. Need to ask Volker to use the CLAS ADC.
      • DAQ: be operational in August or September at the latest.
    3. Position detector: timing will probably be to tight for the SciFi traker and too expensive. Will continue with the prototype. GEM is our main option for tracking. Dipangkar will follow up with Nilanga.
  • Talks:
    1. Q2 resolution by Ashot (9 pages)
    2. Thin Window and Vacuum Box by Gary (5 pages)
    3. Back Scattering in GEM or SFT by Chao (10 pages)
    4. Tracking by Chao (8 pages)
    5. SciFi Tracker Status by Zhihong (16 pages)
    6. Tracking by Li (4 pages)

April 25

  • Participants: Alexander, Ashot, Chao, Dipangkar, Eugene, Francois-Xavier, Haiyan, Josh, Li, Mahbub, Mehdi, Zhihong
  • Minutes:
    1. Eugene Pasyuk joined the PRad collaboration
    2. Mahbub: Chambers will be done and shipper next week. Estimated delivery at JLab: May 7th-8th. This may change due to customs potential delays.
    3. Haiyan will send to Volker and all relevant persons the drawings of the vacuum box for a design review.
    4. Based on Chao and Li simulations, a tube connected to the vacuum box and going through HyCal is the best option for background purposes.
    5. Next collaboration meeting Friday May 23rd.
  • Talks:
    1. Updated design of the vacuum box by Gary (4 pages)
    2. Vacuum Box window simulation by Chao (7 pages)
    3. Vacuum box tube and flange simulation by Li (8 pages)
    4. New event generators for the PRad experiment by Alexander (10 pages)

April 18

  • Participants: Alexander, Ashot, Chao, Dipangkar, Gary, Haiyan, Josh, Li, Mahbub, Mehdi, Zhihong
  • Minutes:
    1. Josh/Gary: Will need a gate valve upstream of the target chamber. HallB should have one that we can use. Gary will check carefully if we can find a large enough sheet for the vacuum box window. He will focus on the box and the flange. He will proceed by iterations with Jlab to check the design.
    2. Josh:
      • We need to provide him with the stand for the chambers so that he does not need to build a temporary one for the test. Ashot: HallB will build the stands.
      • Give him the cell size we would like. Possibility of having different cell size but the surver will no longer be valid after a swap or cells.
      • Need to give him the clearance between the cell and heavy materials.
      • Need to give him the number and type of solid target. Ashot is working on that.
    3. Haiyan will follow up with Rolf and Volker about the procurement and design review of the vacuum box.
    4. Chao: will do a simulation, just for checking, of a 25mm diameter cell, 4mm diameter opening and 3mm thick copper tube.

April 11

  • Participants: Alexander, Ashot, Chao, Dipangkar, Francois-Xavier, Haiyan, Josh, Li, Mahbub, Mehdi, Zhihong
  • Minutes:
    1. Ashot: Talked to Volker, good chance we could start moving HyCal to the hall 2-3 weeks earlier than planned. Will be difficult to get a russian calorimeter expert to come to Jlab due to DOE new rule. Maybe invite him through a University.
    2. Haiyan: talked to Rolf, HallC or D engineers will help to review and advise the vacuum box design. Timeline: get the design reviewed by June and start the procurement by July.
    3. Ashot, Mahbub: will work on the extension of the MRI funds.
    4. Zhihong, Chao will setup the DAQ and start the fiber test next week. Mahbub will ask Bogdan to borrow electronics and PMT.
    5. FX: Bob Miller agreed to work on the stand of the vacuum box given he has a preliminary design of the box
    6. Mehdi: vacuum box design: target cell center is at 550cm from HyCal surface. 20cm gap for tracking detector between the vacuum box window and HyCal -> 530cm between the target center and the vacuum box window.
    7. Li will pursue his effort on vaccum box window and pipe simulation with more statistic, will add collimator.
    8. Chao is working on updating the simulation will a new beam halo parameter.

April 4

  • Participants: Alexander, Chao, Chris, Dipangkar, Francois-Xavier, Josh, Li, Mahbub, Mehdi, Zhihong
  • Minutes:
    1. Josh:
      • Need to define empty target run: either good vacuum in the cell and chamber or same pressure in cell as in the target chamber (when hydrogen is flowing).
      • Need to define the type and number of solid targets. One solid target would be the easiest configuation.
      • Can we make the target cell diameter bigger? This would help the pressure inside the cell. Main unknown: the beam halo extension. FX is checking with Arne for a conservative and realistic estimate.
      • How far away from the cell can be accept heavy material? Answer will depend again on the beam halo.
      • Need to provide design and support structure for the pumps and chambers. Mehdi will ask Gary Swift if he can help.
    2. All: Need to provide Josh answers within two weeks.
    3. Mehdi: Will ask Huntington for the software of the 3D positioner.
    4. Zhihong: Will talk to Carlos Ayerbe about DAQ availability.

March 28

  • Participants: Alexander, Ashot, Chao, Dipangkar, Francois-Xavier, Li, Mehdi and Zhihong
  • Minutes:
    1. Li: (See slide below) From his study, GEM generate low background. Also vacuum box with a pipe that runs through HyCal is a better solution than a single thin window. Need confirmation of this result with Moller events. Simulation is ongoing.
    2. Ashot presented a plot of Q2 resolution vs angle with 100 μm beam spot, 2 mm Al window and vertex uniformly distributed along the z axis (4cm total). 0.3 mm resolution tracking detector would be desirable.
    3. Mehdi: Working with Gary Swift from TUNL on the vacuum box. Will work with Bob Michael to get his feedback on the design.

March 14

  • Participants: Alexander, Ashot, Chao, Dipangkar, Francois-Xavier, Li, Mahbub, Mehdi and Zhihong
  • Minutes:
    1. Zhihong: Almost ready to test the fibers (Power supplies, NIM crate, Fastbus, fibers and SiPMT are on site). Asked the Jlab machine shop to produce fiber/SiPM connectors. Looking for a black box (~2m long) for a light yield test. SiPM will be from HallB and different type of fiber form HallC. An cost estimate of the detector for PRad is ~$80k + overhead and without DAQ.
    2. Dipangkar will talk to the NorthWestern group about MaPMT (16 pixels) from D0, Ashot will ask Bogdan for DAQ and other items.
    3. Li: Fixed the bug in his code. Results are shown in the presentation below. He will redo the study with an energy deposit cut in HyCal and no angle cut, similar to a level 1 trigger.

March 7

  • Participants: Alexander, Ashot, Chao, Li, Mahbub, Mehdi and Zhihong
  • Minutes:
    1. Chao and Li picked up part of the 3D positionner at NSU. One box was to big to fit in their car. They will complete the job by Tuesday.
    2. Ashot: talked to Bob and Volker, PRad is on the same footing as HPS as long as we passed the March 21st internal review with JLab management. According to Arne, the beam quality should be OK for 1-2GeV.
    3. Chao will look into the background rates due to the collimator
    4. Li will cross check his results with Chao's code to understand why the rates get smaller when the vacuum box window gets thicker. May be due to statistic.

February 28

  • Minutes:
    1. Target Chambers: Mahbub and Mehdi sent the initialed drawings back to Pfeiffer. Construction will take ~8-10 weeks. Little issue with an extra $200 shipping cost. Will ask for a separate bill in order to avoid redoing a new order at NSU.
    2. Alignment System: Delivered Monday Feb. 24th. Vina will bring it to Jlab.
    3. Coordinate Detector: Zhihong has been award of an $11k JSA Postdoctoral Fellowship. Will be used towards a XY position detector prototype (scintillating fiber). He will give a talk at the next CLAS meeting on Monday March 3rd. Seems that this type of detector is the best option (no need to be as precise as GEM (see Chao's studies), the UVA group is already very busy with SuperBigBite and SoLID) however the cost needs to be evaluated. Zhihong will contact detector engineers at Jlab as wells as at Saint Gobain. Will need help from Jlab for the electronic.
    4. Ahsot, FX and Mahbub will work on the halo monitor.
